Haruta Soichi and Maki Ryota are back—and they're married! After Maki's overseas assignment in Singapore, the couple finally begins their long-awaited life as newlyweds in Tokyo. But domestic bliss quickly collides with reality: demanding careers, endless housework, and the chaos of merging two lives into one. In an attempt to ease the burden, Haruta hires a housekeeping service, only to find the person ringing their doorbell is none other than his former boss and one-time love rival, Musashi Kurosawa. Now retired and working as a professional housekeeper, Kurosawa re-enters their lives with a mix of motherly concern, lingering jealousy, and trademark dramatic flair. What follows is a riotously funny and deeply tender exploration of marriage, family, and what it truly means to build a home. Balancing laugh-out-loud chaos with sincere emotional beats, *Ossan's Love Returns* proves that love only deepens when you learn to communicate, compromise, and laugh at yourself together.

I am absolutely living for Haruta and Maki's married life! Their communication goals are beyond anything I've seen in BL—they actually talk through problems and apologize. The domestic moments (cooking, cleaning, sleeping in) are so pure and cute. Also, that cameo from Moonlight Chicken characters? Iconic. I cried happy tears every single episode.

Visually, this season is a huge upgrade from 2018—lighting is warmer, color grading is intentional, and the close-ups on Tanaka Kei's ridiculous facial expressions are comedy gold. The director uses deep focus to capture the chaos of their tiny apartment beautifully. Only lost points because some of the new side character scenes felt a bit rushed cutting-wise.

I appreciate the show's commitment to mature conflict resolution, but the tonal whiplash between slapstick and serious drama (especially with the new couple's storyline about grief and non-consensual kissing) felt jarring. Kurosawa is still over-the-top in ways that can grate. That said, the main couple's arc is tight, and episode 5's hot spring scene is a masterclass in physical comedy.

This season handles the reality of a gay couple in Japan (where same-sex marriage isn't legal) with surprising nuance—they talk about 'ceremonial weddings' and family pressure. The communication between Haruta and Maki is refreshingly healthy. However, I'm uncomfortable with the non-consensual kiss between the new characters being played as a plot point; it could have been handled with more care. Still, the overall message of building a family on love not blood is powerful.

I came for Haruta and Maki but stayed for Izumi and Kikunosuke! Their tragic backstory and slow-burn healing arc hit me right in the feels. Miura Shohei and Iura Arata have incredible chemistry even in their messy, painful moments. Yes, the non-consensual kiss scene was hard to watch, but the resolution felt earned. This show made me cry harder over a side couple than most main couples ever do.
