In an alternate 1716 Japan, a mysterious epidemic decimates the male population, leaving only one man for every four women. Society has completely flipped: women now hold power, govern the state, and pursue men for their ‘seed,’ while men are prized for their beauty and ability to produce heirs. At the center of this new world is the Ooku—the shōgun’s inner chamber—a lavish palace filled with hundreds of handsome men vying for the favor of a single female ruler. Into this gilded cage steps Unoshin Mizuno, a poor but noble-hearted samurai who joins the Ooku to secure his family’s future. He leaves behind his beloved Onobu, hoping the sacrifice will be worth it. Once inside, he discovers a world of ruthless competition, political intrigue, and forbidden emotions. Amid the silk and shadows, a forbidden bond grows between Mizuno and a mysterious higher-ranking man, challenging his honor and his heart. As a new, strong-willed shōgun ascends, Mizuno must navigate treachery and desire—and decide what truly matters. This stunning film breathes life into a reverse-harem historical fantasy, blending romance, action, and a sharp critique of gender roles.

I'm absolutely captivated by the visual world of Ooku. The kimonos, the tatami rooms, the way the candlelight flickers across the men's faces—it’s like walking into a living ukiyo-e painting. Every costume is a statement, and the camera lingers just long enough to make you feel the weight of silk and secrecy. A true feast for the eyes that also tells a smart story.

As a longtime fan of Fumi Yoshinaga's manga, I was nervous about a live-action adaptation. But this film captures the spirit perfectly—the quiet anguish, the politics, the beauty. They condensed the sprawling story into a tight narrative that still feels true to the source. The casting is impeccable; Ninomiya Kazunari embodies Mizuno's honor and heart. A rare adaptation that honors its roots.

I came for the historical drama but stayed for the heartbreaking romance. Mizuno and his love interest have this quiet, aching chemistry that kills me. Every glance, every almost-touch, every line of longing—I was rooting for them so hard. The ending left me with a bittersweet smile. If you love slow-burn romance in a beautiful setting, this is your film.

I appreciate the ambition of Ooku—the gender-reversed harem concept is genuinely fresh. But the pacing is uneven; we rush through years of political shifts and character arcs. The final twist, while clever, felt a bit convenient. Some supporting characters are underdeveloped. Still, the core story is interesting enough to keep you watching, just don't expect a flawless narrative.

This film offers a fascinating lens on power and gender. The Ooku is essentially a cage of beautiful men whose worth is measured by their ability to please a woman—a mirror of historical harems but reversed. I loved how it subtly critiques objectification while still giving its male characters agency. The romance is built on mutual respect, not coercion, which is refreshing. A must-watch for anyone interested in queer socio-political drama.
