Set against the vibrant backdrop of Manila, *Nena* is a quietly revolutionary 2014 Filipino film that explores first love, identity, and the courage it takes to be true to oneself. The story follows two young men whose paths cross in an unexpected encounter, sparking a tender connection that neither can ignore. As they navigate the thrill of new feelings and the fear of societal judgment, they must decide whether to hide their growing bond or embrace it openly. With minimal dialogue and a focus on lingering glances, small gestures, and the raw vulnerability of first love, *Nena* captures the bittersweet beauty of a romance that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable. This indie gem is celebrated for its authentic portrayal of gay love in the Philippines, offering a gentle, hopeful narrative that resonates long after the credits roll. It’s a must-see for fans of intimate, character-driven LGBTQ+ stories.

I absolutely melted watching *Nena*. The chemistry between the leads is so natural and quiet – every glance and touch felt real. It’s the kind of love story that stays with you. One of the most heartfelt Filipino BL films I’ve seen.

The visual storytelling here is stunning. Soft lighting, handheld shots that feel intimate, and gorgeous Manila backdrops. The film trusts its images to convey emotion, and it pays off beautifully. A masterclass in indie filmmaking.

I admired the sincerity, but the pacing dragged in the middle, and the script felt a bit thin. Some scenes could have been trimmed. Still, the emotional payoff at the end made it worthwhile for what it is – a simple, honest love story.

This film deserves more recognition. It handles the fear of coming out and the weight of societal expectations with remarkable sensitivity. The characters’ consent and emotional boundaries are respected throughout. A vital, gentle piece of queer media.

The music was minimal and mostly ambient – which suited the tone, but I wished for a stronger, more memorable theme. A single guitar melody repeats often. Not bad, but nothing I’d listen to on its own. Still, the quietness added to the intimacy.
