Set in the neon-drenched streets of Shinjuku, *Naughty Boys* follows Gacchan and his boyfriend Takayuki on what should be a simple birthday celebration. But when Gacchan's night out takes an unexpected turn, the couple's evening spirals into a series of encounters that test their trust and love. Blending a real-life manga aesthetic with the raw energy of early 2000s Japanese cinema, the film captures a single transformative night filled with chance meetings, unspoken tensions, and tender moments. As the hours pass, Gacchan and Takayuki must navigate jealousy, desire, and the fragile line between fantasy and reality. This nostalgic gem offers a rare, unfiltered look at queer love in Tokyo's underground scene, delivering a bittersweet and intimate portrait of two boys learning what it truly means to hold on.

I can't believe this little film from 2001 still makes my heart flutter. Sure, the acting is rough and the camera work is shaky, but the raw chemistry between Gacchan and Takayuki is so genuine. It's like watching a secret memory of two boys truly in love. A beautiful time capsule.

Honestly, I struggled to get through this. The pacing is painfully slow, the dialogue feels stilted, and the plot is virtually nonexistent. I get that it's a early 2000s indie film, but that doesn't excuse the lack of coherent storytelling. Only for hardcore completionists.

The cinematography has this grungy, lo-fi charm that really captures the Shinjuku night scene. I loved how the neon signs and shadows create a dreamy, almost melancholic mood. Too bad the visual flair can't fully rescue the weak script, but as a mood piece it's oddly captivating.

I appreciate the attempt at queer representation from 2001, but the power dynamics and drinking scenes made me uncomfortable. There's a moment where one character's boundaries are clearly ignored, and it's played off as romantic. We need to do better than that, even in historical context.

The soundtrack is honestly the standout—a mix of ambient synth and soft pop that really sells the late-night vibe. If only the rest of the film matched that energy. Decent background noise, but I wouldn't sit through it again for the story.
