Step into the glittering yet volatile world of Filipino showbiz with *My Toxic Lover*, a 7-episode miniseries that promises a whirlwind romance between a megastar and an ordinary soul. Ethon Kaiser (Aki Torres) is a celebrated actor living a life of luxury and constant public scrutiny, hiding a hollow heart beneath his arrogant facade. When he meets Bryce (Kevin Salgado), a humble and earnest artist from the province struggling to save his family, Ethon orchestrates a scheme to bring Bryce into his orbit—binding the young man to him through debt and servitude. What begins as a possessive game of power and attraction slowly unravels into a messy, tangled romance filled with jealousy, secrets, and the ever-looming threat of Ethon’s own toxic relationships. With stunning cinematography of Manila’s high-end interiors and a standout soundtrack that elevates every scene, the series explores themes of class divide, self-destruction, and the dangerous line between obsession and love. But be warned: the journey is as chaotic as it is compelling, with disjointed pacing and over-the-top performances that have divided audiences.

I honestly tried to give this a fair shot because the synopsis sounded interesting, but the execution is a trainwreck. The plot jumps from one scene to another with no logical progression—one minute they're enemies, the next they're lovey-dovey with zero development. And don't get me started on the pacing; it's like the editor fell asleep halfway through. The only reason I finished was to see how bad it could get.

I'm a sucker for a good OST, and this series delivers that in spades. The songs are beautifully composed and perfectly placed—they carry the emotional weight that the acting and writing fail to provide. Seriously, I've added half the tracks to my playlist. But even I can't pretend the rest of the show is watchable. The acting is painfully amateurish, and the story is a mess. Listen to the music, skip the drama.

This show is a masterclass in how NOT to portray a healthy relationship. The 'romance' is built on manipulation, debt bondage, and classist power dynamics that are never called out—it's romanticized as 'fate' when it's really coercion. Plus, the depiction of gay supporting characters is embarrassingly stereotypical and harmful. I kept waiting for some critique of Ethon's toxic behavior, but it never came. Hard pass.

Look, I know this series is bad. The acting is cringey, the plot makes zero sense, and I laughed at scenes that were supposed to be serious. But I'm a sucker for the main couple's chemistry when they actually get screen time together. Kevin Salgado is adorable, and some of their sweet moments (when the editing isn't chaotic) made me smile. It's a guilty pleasure—I'll watch the sequel just to see them again, even if it's terrible.

I have to admit, the production design caught my eye—the luxury mansions, the art gallery scenes, and the colorful provincial landscapes are shot beautifully. The lighting and color grading are miles ahead of typical Filipino web series. But pretty pictures can't save a story that's all over the place. The director clearly has an eye for visuals but forgot to give the actors direction. Disappointing, because the aesthetic had so much potential.
