In the tender Filipino indie film *My Cousin*, two young men – longtime cousins who’ve grown up as close as brothers – find themselves sharing an unexpected overnight stay after a family gathering. What begins as a casual evening of drinks, laughter, and reminiscing gradually deepens into something neither anticipated. As the night wears on and the alcohol loosens their inhibitions, playful banter gives way to lingering glances and unspoken feelings. The film beautifully captures the quiet tension between familiarity and desire, exploring how the safety of a lifelong bond can become the very thing that makes taking a risk so terrifying. With intimate cinematography and raw, naturalistic performances, *My Cousin* is a poignant, slow-burn romance that asks what happens when love complicates family. It’s a short but emotionally resonant watch for anyone who believes that the heart doesn’t always follow the rules.

I am absolutely melted. The way they look at each other – it’s like the whole world disappears. The night felt so real, from the awkward silences to the tender kisses. Yes, they’re cousins, but the film handles it with so much care that I only ever saw two people falling in love. Perfect slow-burn.

Visually, this short film is a dream. Every scene is framed like a photograph – soft candlelight, shallow depth of field, the way the rain against the window mirrors their inner turmoil. The director clearly knows how to use space and silence to build tension. A masterclass in indie filmmaking.

I appreciate the emotional honesty, but the pacing dragged in the middle – a lot of staring and drinking. And the whole cousin thing never sat well with me, even if the film tries to romanticize it. The acting is solid, the ending felt abrupt. It’s okay, but not groundbreaking.

As a social value analyst, I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it’s a rare honest depiction of queer desire within a Filipino family context. On the other, the incestuous framing – even if fictional – could be triggering for some. The film doesn’t moralize, which I appreciate, but it also doesn't fully address the power dynamics. Still, it’s a thought-provoking watch.

The soundtrack is subtle but perfect – the sound of rain, the clink of glasses, a gentle acoustic guitar that swells at just the right moment. I felt every heartbeat through the audio design. It’s not a score-heavy film, but every sound choice enhances the intimacy. I’ve already added the original song to my playlist.
