Mr. X and I is a rare gem from 2015 China—a raw, heartfelt anthology of four gay love stories ripped straight from real-life experiences. Each episode stands alone, offering a window into the joy, pain, and resilience of queer love in a society that often resists it. In Ep. 1, ‘Us Against the World,’ two high school boys face relentless bullying after their secret gets out, yet find courage in each other. Ep. 2, ‘Beijing Beijing,’ follows a couple torn apart by family pressure, only to reunite years later in the capital. Ep. 3, ‘The Groomsman,’ explores the heartbreaking sacrifice of a boyfriend who steps aside so his partner can marry a woman—all while doubling as the best man. Finally, Ep. 4, ‘Promise You a City,’ tackles adult struggles of unemployment and infidelity in a new city. What makes this series unforgettable is its unflinching honesty: these aren’t fairy tales, but snapshots of real love fighting to survive. With short episodes, strong acting, and intimate direction, Mr. X and I is a poignant, must-watch for anyone seeking authentic LGBTQ+ stories from a time when Chinese censorship hadn’t yet clamped down.

I really appreciate the anthology format and the fact these are real stories. The cinematography stands out—close-ups and shallow depth of field make you feel the isolation of each couple. Episode 2 was my favorite for its emotional editing. Not perfect, but visually thoughtful.

My heart! Episode 1’s schoolboys defending each other against bullying gave me all the feels. The love in these stories is so real and painful but beautiful. I cried during Episode 3—that sacrifice broke me. Yes, the production is a bit rough, but the chemistry makes up for it.

This is an essential watch for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ representation in Chinese media. Each episode forces you to confront real societal issues: bullying, family coercion, forced marriage. It’s not always comfortable, but it’s honest. The consent and power dynamics are handled with care given the era.

The background music is melancholic and fits the mood beautifully, but I wish there were more tracks to remember. Episode 4’s cityscape shots paired with the sad piano were my highlight. Story-wise, some episodes felt rushed. Still, it's worth a listen if you appreciate emotional scores.

I admire the real-life inspiration, but the pacing is uneven—Episode 4 felt incomplete and choppy. The acting is decent, especially in Episode 2, but some plot points are frustrating (why would you be your ex’s best man?). I can’t rate it higher because of logical gaps, but it’s still an important series.
