Mountain and Chen is a tender, emotionally charged Chinese BL web series that explores the fragile threads of a long-lost friendship and the painful, beautiful process of reconnection. After high school, Chen Yi and Shan Yu were inseparable—until life pulled them apart. Years later, they reunite, but Shan Yu has become cold and distant, leaving Chen Yi heartbroken and confused. Desperate to bridge the gap, Chen Yi tries everything: cooking Shan Yu’s favorite meals, sharing quiet dinners, even clinging to him at bedtime. Yet Shan Yu continues to push him away, hiding a hidden wound. Set against a backdrop of muted cityscapes and intimate domestic scenes, this short but powerful 12-episode series dives deep into themes of unspoken love, regret, and the courage to be vulnerable. What makes Mountain and Chen special is its raw focus on emotional intimacy rather than grand gestures—the slow burn of tiny moments, the ache of a hand not taken, the hope in a shared meal. It’s a quiet, heartfelt drama for anyone who believes that love can survive even the longest silences.

I absolutely adored this! The tension between Chen Yi and Shan Yu had me on the edge of my seat. Every time they cooked together or just sat in silence, I felt my heart melt. Wang Chen Rui is so expressive—you can feel his desperation and love through the screen. Yes, it's slow, but that's the beauty of it. If you want a drama that makes you believe in second chances, watch this!

I wanted to like this more, but the story dragged. We get that Shan Yu is distant—but the reasons are revealed way too late, and the middle episodes feel repetitive. Chen Yi's clinginess starts to feel less romantic and more frustrating. For a 12-episode series, the pacing should be tighter. It has heart, but the execution is muddled. A decent watch if you're a fan of the actors, but not groundbreaking.

I appreciate that the show tries to dig into why Shan Yu pulls away, and there are moments of genuine vulnerability. But I was uncomfortable with how Chen Yi keeps pushing physical boundaries—hugging him at night, not taking 'no' for an answer. The drama frames it as romantic, but it borders on ignoring consent. I wish the narrative had addressed this more directly instead of romanticizing persistence. Still, the emotional core is sweet.

Visually, this series is a treat. The lighting is soft and warm, especially in the kitchen scenes—every frame feels like a painting. The use of negative space mirrors the emotional distance between the leads. I loved the color palette: muted blues for Shan Yu's coldness, shifting to amber tones when Chen Yi breaks through. The cinematography elevates what could be a simple story into something cinematic. A feast for the eyes.

The soundtrack is the hidden gem of this series. The piano melodies during the emotional confrontations are hauntingly beautiful—they made me tear up more than once. There's a particular instrumental that plays whenever Chen Yi remembers their past; it perfectly captures nostalgia and regret. I wish the OST was more widely available. The music alone makes the slow-burn worth it.
