More than Words is a profoundly realistic Japanese drama that transcends the typical BL genre, offering a raw and poignant exploration of love, friendship, and the suffocating weight of societal expectations. The story centers on Mieko, a quietly observant young woman, and her vibrant best friend Makio, who together navigate life working part-time at a restaurant. Their close-knit world expands when they meet Eiji, a warm and earnest university student who quickly falls in love with Makio. What begins as a tender romance between the two young men and a beautiful, almost familial bond between the three slowly unravels under the pressure of traditional family values, unspoken desires, and the harsh realities of being LGBTQ+ in Japan. Rather than a simple love triangle, the series delves into the complexities of identity, self-sacrifice, and the painful choices made in the name of love. As Mieko grapples with her own feelings of belonging, and Eiji's family imposes its will, the trio's beautiful connection is tested in ways that leave lasting scars. With its unflinching gaze, stunning cinematography, and emotionally nuanced performances, More than Words is not a story about happy endings, but about the bittersweet, messy, and all-too-human process of growing up and moving on.

I came in expecting a fluffy romance but instead got my heart shattered in the most beautiful way. The chemistry between Makio and Eiji felt so genuine that their heartbreak actually hurt me physically. Mieko's character is frustrating but I understand her desperate need to keep her family together. Not a feel-good watch, but unforgettable.

I appreciate what this drama tried to do, but the execution was frustrating. The whole surrogacy plotline makes zero logical sense - three supposedly smart people agreeing to have a baby to appease a homophobic dad? And Eiji suddenly developing feelings for Mieko felt forced and contradictory to his established gay identity. The ending left me unsatisfied.

Visually, this is one of the most stunning dramas I've ever seen, BL or otherwise. The way silence is used to build tension, the lighting in the apartment scenes, the slow zoom on characters' faces - every shot tells a story. The folding of the kimono scene is pure cinematic poetry. This alone makes it a must-watch for anyone who loves visual storytelling.

I'm conflicted. I love that we get an ace-coded female lead and that the drama doesn't shy away from showing how societal homophobia destroys lives. But the age gap between Eiji (university student) and Makio/Mieko (high schoolers) is gross and completely unnecessary. Also, portraying a gay man 'changing' to love a woman is a harmful trope, even if the ending shows his pain. It deserves discussion, but not blind praise.

Honestly, I ended up rooting more for Makio and Asato than the main pair. Asato came in late but brought such a natural, unburdened energy. He actually sees Makio for who he is and doesn't hide him. The scene where he cuts Makio's hair at the end is so symbolic and healing. I wish we had gotten more episodes of them together, but their quiet love story was a ray of light in all the darkness.
