Fei is a 'moneyboy'—a male sex worker—eking out an existence in the neon-lit underbelly of a sprawling Chinese city. His world is a careful balance of brutal pragmatism and emotional detachment, until a sudden visit to his rural family shatters his fragile peace. They eagerly accept the money he sends home, but violently reject the truth of his sexuality. Broken-hearted and adrift, Fei embarks on a journey of quiet desperation, caught between the shadows of his past—the violent ex-lover Max—and the radiant, unapologetic freedom of his childhood friend Long. This is not a conventional romance; it's a slow-burn, visually stunning character study that explores the suffocating weight of family expectations, the transactional nature of intimacy, and the impossible search for self-worth in a world that commodifies both body and soul. Stunning cinematography and powerhouse performances make 'Moneyboys' an unforgettable, haunting experience.

I was absolutely captivated by the visual poetry of this film. Every single shot could be a still in a gallery—the neon blues against the grimy back alleys, the static wide frames that make you feel like a voyeur. C.B. Yi turned a painful story into a moving painting. It's slow, yes, but that's the point. Pure artistic vision.

As a sociological piece, 'Moneyboys' is fascinating in how it lays bare the intersections of capitalism, filial duty, and queer shame. But as a narrative, it left me frustrated. The characters felt too opaque at times—I wanted more insight into Fei's inner world. The visual style is stunning, but I needed a bit more plot meat on those beautiful bones.

Don't come here for a fairy-tale romance. But do come for one of the most achingly real love stories I've seen—even if it's mostly in glances and silences. Long is everything Fei isn't: open, hopeful, dancing in the rain. That club dance scene alone is worth the watch. It wrecked me in the best way.

I appreciate the ambition and the gorgeous cinematography, but the story feels like a series of beautifully arranged moments rather than a cohesive narrative. Too many characters appear and vanish (what was the point of that wedding subplot?), and Fei's motivations often left me guessing. It's arthouse for arthouse's sake in places. Watch it for the vibes, not the plot.

The soundtrack is absolutely perfect for this film. Phum Viphurit's 'Hello Anxiety' plays at such a crucial moment—it's like the song finally lets Fei breathe. The sound design is sparse but intentional; every silence is loaded. The music doesn't just accompany the scenes, it deepens them. I've had the OST on repeat.
