Set against the quiet, coastal backdrop of a Japanese high school, *Our Youth* is a breathtakingly intimate drama that follows two boys from opposite worlds whose paths are destined to collide. Minase Jin is the model student—top of his class, impeccably behaved, and living a life meticulously planned by his overbearing mother. He is a spectator, watching the chaos of adolescence from a safe distance, especially the antics of Hirukawa Haruki, the school’s notorious troublemaker. Jin prides himself on staying out of trouble, avoiding the delinquent who leads the pack of rule-breakers. But when Jin accidentally discovers a hidden, vulnerable side of Haruki—a secret that exposes the brutal reality of Haruki’s home life—his carefully constructed walls begin to crumble. What starts as reluctant curiosity blossoms into a profound connection, as Jin becomes the one person who truly sees Haruki beyond the bruises and the bad-boy reputation. This is not just a romance; it is a raw, poetic exploration of two lonely souls healing each other through quiet acts of courage. From stolen glances in the classroom to a shared adventure at the sea, their bond deepens as they navigate the treacherous waters of abusive parents, societal expectations, and their own burgeoning feelings. The drama masterfully weaves metaphors of water and tides throughout, reflecting the ebb and flow of their emotions. With exquisite cinematography that captures every unspoken word and a soundtrack that aches with longing, *Our Youth* transcends the typical high school love story. It is a slow-burn, character-driven journey from high school to college and beyond, asking whether love alone is enough to overcome the scars of the past. Earnest, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful, this series will leave you breathless and reaching for a tissue.

I am absolutely OBSESSED with Jin and Haruki. The way they look at each other, the way Haruki's tough exterior cracks around Jin... I felt every single emotion. The tension is unreal, and when they finally kiss, I screamed. This is the kind of slow-burn that makes it all worth it. The special episode? Perfection. I want a thousand more episodes of them being domestic. 10/10 for pure, heart-aching romance.

As a cinematography nerd, I was blown away by the visual language of *Our Youth*. The recurring sea motif, the way light filters through a spinning fan, the long takes of silence that say more than dialogue ever could—it's all deliberate and gorgeous. The directors understand that love is often found in the spaces between words. My only minor critique is one or two acting moments that felt slightly overdone, but overall, this is some of the best visual storytelling in BL.

I see why people love this, but I have some issues. The pacing in the second half gets rushed—especially the time skip and reunion. Also, it bugged me that they never tried to contact each other for years when a simple social media message would have worked. The script relies too much on contrived miscommunication. That said, the emotional core is solid, and the leads carry it well. A good drama, but not the masterpiece everyone claims.

Having read the original webtoon, I was nervous about changes, but I think the adaptation improved some things. The drama wisely focuses on Haruki's domestic violence rather than the school bullying from the manhwa—it feels more grounded. I missed a couple of subplots, but the expanded role of the letter and Jin's novel was a beautiful addition. The casting is spot-on, though I wished they kept the tattoo scene from the source. Overall, a faithful and thoughtful adaptation.

What struck me most is how responsibly this drama handles abuse and consent. Haruki's trauma is never exploited for drama; it's shown with raw honesty, and his healing is gradual. I also appreciate that Jin's privilege is acknowledged—he's not a savior, just a witness who chooses to stay. The series also quietly critiques the lack of legal protection for LGBTQ+ couples in Japan, especially in the special episode. A meaningful, socially conscious love story.

The OST for *Our Youth* is *chef's kiss*. The main theme perfectly captures that bittersweet, yearning feeling of first love. I found myself replaying the instrumental tracks long after finishing the series. The sound design is also meticulous—the waves, the silence, the way the music swells at just the right moments. It elevated every scene. Only wish they had released a full official soundtrack collection!
