Set against the stunning, fog-shrouded backdrop of Chongqing, *May The River and Sea Flow Upward* is a poignant, century-spanning drama that defies simple labels. This film weaves together the lives of three unrelated individuals—a gay man, his aging father, and a mysterious young woman—to explore the quiet, resilient bonds of a chosen family. Through decades of societal change, personal loss, and unspoken love, the story traces how two generations navigate love, identity, and belonging in a culture where family ties are everything. More than a romance, it’s a soulful meditation on what it means to forge home when blood alone isn’t enough. Expect a slow-burn, emotionally layered narrative that celebrates the beauty of unconventional families and the enduring power of selfless love.

I wanted to love this for its message, but honestly, the directing and editing are painful. Scenes jump awkwardly, the acting feels stilted, and the potential of an interesting story is wasted. It's like a heartfelt student film that needed a real budget and a professional editor. Love is love, but this execution broke my heart for all the wrong reasons.

I don't care about the technical flaws—this movie made me cry. The bond between the gay lead and his chosen family is so raw and real. The time-jump ending hit me like a truck. If you're a romantic who values soul over polish, give this a chance. It's a hidden gem that speaks to anyone who's ever felt like an outsider.

I appreciate what the film tries to do for LGBTQ+ representation in China, but it's hard to ignore the clumsy storytelling. The dialogue is often wooden, and the pacing drags. The family drama is compelling in concept but poorly executed. It's watchable if you're starved for Chinese BL content, but don't expect a polished masterpiece.

The cinematography is amateur at best—shaky handheld, inconsistent lighting, and abrupt cuts that ruin any emotional buildup. Chongqing looks beautiful in a few shots, but the visual storytelling is nonexistent. I admire the heart behind the film, but it desperately needed a skilled director of photography. Skip unless you're a completionist.
