In the intimate Filipino short film *Maskara*, love and identity collide in a quiet exploration of what it means to hide behind a literal and emotional mask. The story follows two men whose chance encounter sparks an unexpected connection, but their growing bond is shadowed by the roles they play in society and the secrets they keep. As they peel back layers of pretense, they discover that the true self—vulnerable, raw, and unadorned—is both the greatest risk and the only path to genuine intimacy. With a runtime that feels like a whispered confession, *Maskara* uses silence, lingering gazes, and the symbolic weight of a carnival mask to ask: Can love survive when the mask finally falls? This is not a flamboyant romance but a quiet, melancholic meditation on authenticity in a world that demands performance.

I get why people hate this—it's glacially slow and barely has a plot. But as an aesthetics geek, I was mesmerized by the lighting and the way the dusty carnival setting mirrors the characters' hidden selves. That final shot of the mask floating in water? Haunting. Not for everyone, but if you like mood over story, it's worth a look.

I respect independent film, but this felt like a first-year student project. The acting is wooden, the dialogue is almost nonexistent, and the 'mask' metaphor is hammered so hard it loses all subtlety. I wanted to like the romance, but there's zero chemistry between the leads. A noble effort that just doesn't land.

I'm a sucker for any BL that tries to be deep, but *Maskara* left me cold. The longing glances were pretty, but I need at least some conversation to believe in a love story. It's like they were afraid to show emotion. The ending made me sad, but not in a cathartic way—just frustrated. Could've been a 10 if they'd fleshed out the characters.

I appreciate the attempt to explore identity and the performance of masculinity in a conservative society. The mask as a symbol of queer closeting is powerful. But the execution is so vague that the message gets lost. The characters have no agency—they're just sad faces in a carnival. Important themes, but you need more than a metaphor to tell a story.
