In the sun-drenched, tradition-bound island town of Marahuyo, an audacious new student arrives like a storm. King (Adrian Lindayag) isn't your typical transfer student—he’s a whip-smart, unapologetic activist determined to start the first LGBTQIA+ organization on campus, a mission that immediately pits him against the powerful local church and a deeply conservative administration. But as King rallies a quirky, vibrant 'barkada' of fellow queer students and allies—including the stoic student council president Ino (Neo France Garcia), who harbors secrets of his own—the series becomes more than just a fight for a club. It’s a poignant celebration of identity, found family, and the messy, beautiful process of coming out in a society that still fears what it doesn’t understand. With a sharp script that seamlessly weaves Philippine colonial history, mythological references, and modern-day struggles, *Marahuyo Project* is a tender and incisive coming-of-age story that proves love—and the courage to be seen—can bloom even in the most hostile soil.

I am completely obsessed with King and Ino. Their slow-burn romance is everything—the way Ino's tsundere exterior slowly melts around King's relentless sunshine gave me butterflies every single episode. That last scene by the sea? Perfection. No steamy kisses needed when your heart is this full.

While I liked the main couple, my soul belongs to Venice and Archie. Venice's fierce loyalty and Archie's painful internal conflict—especially his struggle between faith and identity—was the emotional core of the show for me. I desperately need a spin-off focusing on their journey.

I really wanted to love this more, but the 8-episode runtime wasn't enough to properly develop all the subplots. The mother's storyline in episode 4 feels brushed aside, and the water rescue scene was unintentionally funny because it was so shallow. The ending also felt rushed—it needed at least two more episodes to breathe.

Finally, a series that treats queer issues with the gravity they deserve while still being hopeful. The depiction of internalized homophobia, family rejection, and the institutional role of the church is handled with care. I only wish the creators had added trigger warnings for past suicide and deadnaming—those scenes hit hard without warning.

For a low-budget series, the cinematography is stunning. The tropical island palette—turquoise water, golden sunsets, lush greens—is used symbolically, contrasting the oppressive school interiors. The fourth-wall breaks are filmed with playful angles that make King's monologues feel intimate. A visual feast that punches way above its weight.
