In this visually stunning Japanese film adaptation of Tanizaki Junichiro's classic novel, *Manji Reverse* follows Sonoda, a man who abandons his stable career to chase his dream of becoming a painter. Now an art student, he depends financially on his lawyer's wife while struggling to find his artistic voice. His world is shaken when he meets Hikari, a captivating and enigmatic young woman who becomes both his muse and his obsession. As Sonoda's attraction deepens, he finds himself entangled in a web of forbidden desires, blurred loyalties, and the quiet destruction of his marriage. This is not a simple love triangle—it's a layered exploration of bisexuality, emotional dependency, and the art of self-deception. Shot with a painterly eye and filled with charged silences, *Manji Reverse* is a gorgeously melancholy drama that asks how much of ourselves we are willing to lose for a moment of beauty.

I am absolutely mesmerized by this film. Every shot is like a painting, and the way the camera lingers on Hikari's face — I felt Sonoda's obsession viscerally. The slow burn is perfect, and the ending left me breathless. Not for everyone, but for those who love artful, melancholic romance, this is a masterpiece.

Beautiful to look at, but the pacing is glacial and the characters are so self-destructive that I found it hard to care. The bisexual representation is interesting, but the script relies too much on mood and not enough on plot progression. A decent arthouse piece, but not a satisfying drama.

As a bisexual viewer, I appreciate that the film doesn't sensationalize bisexuality, but the power dynamics and emotional coercion within the affair made me uncomfortable. The film never really critiques the toxic behavior — it just presents it as beautiful. Needed more ethical reflection.

The chemistry between Sonoda and Hikari is electric! I was rooting for them even though I knew it was wrong. The longing looks, the stolen moments — it's all so intensely romantic in a tragic way. If you love forbidden love stories with a lot of emotional depth, don't miss this.

Having read Tanizaki's novel, I was curious how they'd adapt it. They capture the essence of the obsession beautifully, but they toned down some of the more shocking psychological twists. Acting is superb, especially the female lead. A faithful but slightly sanitized version that still holds its own.
