In this poignant 38-minute Japanese film, a quiet love triangle unfolds between Doumoto, his long-time girlfriend Kanako, and his secret boyfriend Souta. Caught between societal expectation and his true desires, Doumoto tries to maintain both relationships, but the emotional strain becomes impossible to hide. Through minimal dialogue and powerful body language, the film intimately explores the pain of deception and the courage it takes to face the truth. Kanako, initially portrayed as the oblivious third wheel, emerges as a surprisingly empathetic figure whose heartbreak is given equal weight. The story avoids a tragic ending, offering instead a bittersweet resolution that prioritizes honesty over easy happiness. Accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful song that perfectly encapsulates the film's themes, 'Love Place: Hakanaki Kata Omoi – Gaiya no Koi' is a compact but emotionally charged drama that proves even a short runtime can deliver a resonant, character-driven story about love, betrayal, and self-discovery.

I watched this on a whim and honestly, it broke my heart in the best way. The chemistry between Doumoto and Souta is so tender, but Kanako's pain is just as real. I cried when she finally realizes—you can see it in her eyes. The ending gave me hope without being cheesy. A hidden gem for those who want a love story with actual consequences.

It's an okay short film, but the love triangle trope is nothing new. The runtime is too short for any real development—you don't get to know why Doumoto strings both people along. The acting is decent, especially from the female lead, but the pacing drags in the silent scenes. The song is nice but three repeats is excessive. Worth a watch if you have 38 minutes to kill.

That ending song alone made the whole film for me. It's so hauntingly beautiful—I've had it on repeat since I finished. Ravel's Bolero playing in the background during the tense scene added such a layer of elegance. The music carries the emotions better than the dialogue. I'd recommend it to anyone who appreciates a perfectly matched OST.

I appreciated that the film gave the girlfriend a voice. Too often in BL love triangles, the woman is just a plot device. Here, Kanako's heartbreak is front and center. However, I wish the film had addressed the consent and honesty issues more directly—Doumoto's behavior is manipulative, and the resolution feels a bit too forgiving. Still, a valuable watch for showing the ripple effects of closeted love.

Visually, this film is surprisingly polished for a short indie. The color palette shifts from warm, cozy tones during happy moments to cold, blue hues as tension rises. The close-ups on hands and eyes say more than any line. The direction is confident—every frame feels intentional. I'd love to see more from this director.
