Love in the Ungodly Hour is a poignant Filipino short film that dives headfirst into the raw, often unspoken realities of love, stigma, and redemption. The story follows two young men whose passionate relationship is brutally severed when one of them is diagnosed with a highly stigmatized disease—an immunodeficiency disorder linked to AIDS. Unable to cope with the fear and societal pressure, the other lover abandons him without a word. Years later, the one who left returns, now a man broken by guilt and desperate for the very love and acceptance he once denied. This film doesn't shy away from the devastating impact of prejudice or the quiet courage it takes to face a past steeped in pain. With a runtime that packs an emotional punch, it explores whether forgiveness is possible when trust has been shattered by the ugliest of fears. Anchored by soulful performances from its cast, Love in the Ungodly Hour is a beautifully shot, heartbreaking plea for compassion and a reminder that love, even in its most ungodly hours, can still be a healing force.

I was sobbing by the end. The raw pain between the two leads felt so real, and you could see the love even when everything was falling apart. It's not a fluffy love story, but it's one of the most honest portrayals of second chances I've seen. The chemistry was heartbreakingly good.

I appreciate the attempt to address HIV stigma, but the storytelling felt rushed and overly reliant on melodrama. The dialogue was stiff at times, and the character motivations weren't fully explored. Good intentions don't automatically make a good film. A longer runtime might have helped.

This film courageously brings attention to a deeply stigmatized health issue in the Philippines, and for that alone it deserves respect. However, the power dynamics and lack of clear communication between the ex-lovers could have been handled with more nuance. It’s a step forward for representation, but the emotional manipulation left me uneasy.

Visually, the film has some nice moments—soft lighting and close-ups that capture anguish well—but the overall production feels like a student project. The color grading is inconsistent and some shots are poorly composed. The story deserved a more polished look to match its emotional weight.

The background score really elevated the emotional beats. There's a piano theme that plays during the reunion scene that absolutely destroyed me. Sound design is often overlooked in short films, but here it created an atmosphere of longing and regret. I only wish there was a full OST release.
