Love by Chance is a landmark Thai BL that redefined the genre by centering on a romance built on communication, trust, and consent—a rarity in the often melodramatic world of university-set dramas. The story begins when timid, secretly gay college freshman Pete accidentally crashes into Ae, a friendly and popular engineering student. Instead of anger, Ae offers kindness and unexpected protection, especially when Pete faces blackmail from a homophobic bully. Their friendship deepens as Ae, who initially identifies as straight, slowly realizes his feelings for Pete. What follows is a refreshingly mature journey where the two talk through jealousy, insecurity, and societal pressure without resorting to drawn-out misunderstandings. But the series doesn't stop there: it weaves in three other couples, each with their own arcs. Tin, a cold rich heir, and Can, a loud soccer-mad freshman, have an enemies-to-lovers story that explores trauma and redemption. Meanwhile, the dark pairings of Kengkla/Techno and Tum/Tar tackle themes of coercion and sexual assault—controversially. The main couple's pure, honest love anchors the show, making it a must-watch for those seeking both fluffy highs and thought-provoking lows, though viewers must brace for problematic side plots that sparked intense debate.

I'm a total sucker for Ae and Pete! Their relationship is everything I've ever wanted in a BL—honest, communicative, and so damn sweet. The way Ae protects Pete and how Pete learns to open up just made my heart flutter. Yes, there are some problematic side stories that I fast-forwarded through, but the main couple is perfection. Their first kiss and that whole scene in episode 7? Absolutely iconic! This is comfort food for the soul, and I've already rewatched their parts three times.

I get the hype for Ae and Pete—they're cute, they talk like adults, hats off for that. But the rest of the show is a chaotic mess. Tin and Can's story is rushed and full of repetitive bickering, and the Kengkla/Techno plot is not just bad writing, it's ethically disgusting. How can you have a character like Tum dealing with rape trauma and then turn around and make Kla rape Techno as a 'romantic' gesture? The pacing falls apart in the second half, and too many storylines go nowhere. I'm giving it a 6 because the main couple's arc is genuinely good—but that's about it.

I can't recommend this show without a massive trigger warning. The main couple is fine, but the side plots are dangerously irresponsible. Kengkla raping Techno and then having them end up together? Tum forcing himself on Tar after Tar confides his trauma? This isn't romance—it's romanticization of sexual assault. As someone who studies consent in media, this set back BL representation years. Ae's possessiveness also borders on coercion (punishing Pete with kisses). The fact that these scenes are played for drama and not condemned is unforgivable. Skip this unless you're ready to be angry.

I read the novel before watching, and honestly, the drama cuts out so much essential backstory (Ae's low self-esteem, Pete's past with Trump, Tin's brother betrayal). The series feels like a highlight reel that misses the emotional depth. That said, Perth and Saint capture Ae and Pete's essence perfectly—their chemistry is pure magic. But the added couples (Kengkla/Techno, Tum/Tar) aren't in the original book and feel tacked on to pad runtime. If you're a purist like me, read the novel first; it makes the series far more enjoyable.

The OST for Love by Chance is an absolute banger! 'It's Maybe Love' by Stamp is my go-to shower song, and the instrumental scores during Ae and Pete's tender moments gave me chills. The show uses music to enhance the emotional beats—the guitar riff when Ae first realizes his feelings? Chef's kiss. Even the ending theme stays with you. I docked a couple points because some side couples barely have any music identity, but for the main romance, the soundtrack makes every scene memorable. I still hum the songs months later.

Cinematography-wise, this is a mixed bag. The lighting in the dorm scenes and the cafe where Ae and Pete meet is soft and warm—very romantic. There's a beautiful shot of Pete in the rain that looks like an indie film. But the editing during action sequences (if you can call them that) is choppy, and some of the Dutch angles feel amateurish. Also, they reuse the same camera setup for kissing scenes too often. That said, for a 2018 Thai BL, it's above average. The costume design for Tin (all those tailored suits) is on point, even if Can's wardrobe is chaotic.

Yes, the main couple is adorable, but I'm here for Tin and Can! Their enemies-to-lovers dynamic had me hooked from the first argument. Tin's tragic backstory (betrayal by his brother) and Can's stubborn optimism create such a compelling push-pull. Their date episode and the heartbreaking ending made me cry—I just wanted Tin to be happy. Sure, their development is rushed and some moments are cringey, but Mean and Plan acted their hearts out. I'm so glad LBC2 gave them more screen time. They deserved a happy ending and they got it!

I forced myself to finish this because of all the praise, but honestly? Overhyped. Ae is a walking red flag with his possessiveness, and Pete's constant timidity got annoying. The only thing that kept me watching was the occasional banter between Tin and Can. The rape scenes made me feel sick, and the acting from some side characters is wooden. I'd rather rewatch 2gether or SOTUS. Love by Chance feels like a draft that needed more editing. Not for me.
