In the bustling halls of a Chinese university, an otherwise ordinary military training exercise sparks an extraordinary connection between two polar opposites. Mai Ding is a relentlessly cheerful, quirky otaku who lives by his own rules, while An Zi Yan is the brooding, stoic heartthrob everyone admires from afar. When a casual bet leads Mai Ding to pursue An Zi Yan, their initial clash of personalities gives way to a beguiling dance of persistence and reluctant fascination. As Mai Ding chips away at An Zi Yan’s impenetrable walls, a fierce and tender love blossoms—one that defies social norms and forces both to confront their deepest fears. But the real test comes when they must face the harsh reality of conservative families, societal judgment, and the agonizing question of whether love can truly conquer all. Equal parts laugh-out-loud comedy and gut-wrenching drama, *Like Love* captures the messy, beautiful, and often painful journey of two young men daring to love openly in a world that tells them they shouldn’t. With its raw emotion, unforgettable leads, and unflinching look at the cost of authenticity, this series is a cult classic that still resonates years after its release.

I am absolutely obsessed with Mai Ding and An Zi Yan! Their chemistry is off the charts. Mai Ding’s persistent dorkiness and Zi Yan’s reluctant softening had me squealing from episode one. The way Zi Yan finally kneels for Mai Ding’s mother is the most romantic thing I’ve ever seen. Yes, the production is rough, but their love feels so real and earned. I’ve rewatched it five times already!

I really wanted to like this, but the writing is all over the place. Scenes jump without explanation, characters appear in bedrooms randomly, and I still don't understand why An Zi Yan falls for Mai Ding. The acting is stiff, and the pacing makes a 3-hour runtime feel like a slog. The explicit scenes are the only thing that save it from being a total waste, but even those are poorly lit and awkward.

I have to call out the first sex scene in the uncut version: Mai Ding is drunk, the lighting is creepy, and the whole thing feels coercive rather than romantic. It triggered my discomfort as a viewer. The family drama is handled with some nuance, but the show romanticizes a persistent pursuit that borders on harassment. I appreciate the attempt at realistic coming-out struggles, but the consent issues are a hard pass for me.

The soundtrack of *Like Love* is an absolute gem. The theme song is hauntingly beautiful, and the background music perfectly punctuates every emotional beat—from the hilarious chase scenes to the heartbreaking hospital moment. I still listen to the instrumental tracks when I need a good cry. Even if the direction is amateurish, the music elevates the entire experience. Worth watching just for the audio alone!

As a fan of the original novel, I was excited but then let down. The series captures the chaotic energy of Mai Ding well, but it rushes through key character development and skips entire storylines that made the book so rich. An Zi Yan’s emotional depth is reduced to silent stares, and the intimate scenes lack the novel's slow-burn build-up. It’s not a bad adaptation if you haven’t read it, but I wish they had dedicated more episodes.
