Thousands of years ago, the Red and Celestial Fox tribes forged a magical drum of immense power. When a Celestial Fox fairy is murdered by a Red Fox member, a chain of revenge and forbidden love is unleashed. In modern times, Mi Ge, a reincarnated Celestial Fox heir, lives a mundane life until he meets Ouyang Zhou, a mysterious scholar drawn to the ancient artifact. As drum’s echoes awaken forgotten memories, Mi Ge must confront a tragic past and a love that defies tribal feuds. This Chinese fantasy romance weaves folklore with star-crossed longing, exploring identity, sacrifice, and the cost of breaking a century-old curse. With a small budget but heartfelt ambition, Legend of Mr. Fox offers a unique blend of mythology and queer romance, set against a backdrop of gorgeous traditional costumes and poignant, if uneven, storytelling.

I wanted to love this because the concept of fox spirits and reincarnated love is right up my alley, but the execution completely let me down. The acting was wooden, especially in emotional scenes, and the jumpy editing made me feel like I missed half the plot. I laughed at a crying scene when I should have been sobbing—that's a huge red flag.

Okay, I admit the budget is tiny and some of the acting is rough, but I still found the folklore elements charming. The costumes, especially the traditional fox-themed robes, were beautiful. And the tragic ending actually got me a little misty-eyed. It's not for everyone, but if you love fantasy BL and can overlook flaws, give it a chance.

The script desperately needed another draft. Characters make decisions that contradict established lore, and the drum's magic is so poorly explained that I spent half the runtime confused. The fight scenes are embarrassingly staged. I appreciate the attempt at queer representation, but a good story needs more than good intentions.

The OST is actually not bad—there's a melancholic flute motif that fits the tragic love story. Too bad the rest of the film couldn't match that emotional quality. The music carried me through some otherwise awkward scenes. I wish the director had leaned more into the score to bridge the gaps in acting.
