Imagine an alien engineer who’s been given the ultimate demolition job: destroy Earth to build a cosmic expressway. That’s Shun, and he’s ready to press the button—until he tastes Chondan’s cooking. What follows is a hilariously offbeat, food-fueled romance where intergalactic deadlines clash with earthly flavors. As Shun keeps delaying the apocalypse for one more plate of comfort food, the line between mission and emotion blurs. With a quirky ensemble—including a talking cat, a slow-speaking sidekick, and a barista with a hidden agenda—'Last Meal Universe' serves up a sweetly chaotic story about finding home in the most unexpected place. It’s a warm, weird, and surprisingly heartfelt tale that proves sometimes the end of the world can wait for a perfect meal.

I went in for the weird alien premise but stayed for the soft looks Shun gives Chondan while eating his food. Their chemistry is so understated and real—every shared plate felt like a love confession. Yes, the side plots (especially the cat and the female barista) were annoying, but the main couple’s moments were pure gold. I just wish we got more screen time of them being cute instead of filler. Still, it’s a sweet, weird little gem.

The idea is brilliant—alien delays apocalypse for good food—but the execution falls flat. Pacing is all over the place, side characters eat up time without adding depth, and the ending feels rushed and unsatisfying. The romantic tension doesn’t build properly until the final episode, which makes the whole series feel like a long setup for a payoff that’s too little, too late. I wanted to love it, but the script needed a tighter edit.

Visually, this is a mess. The CGI for the spaceship and destruction device is laughably bad—it would’ve been charming if it leaned into retro sci-fi, but instead it just looks low-budget. The lighting in the cafe scenes is nice, but the color grading is inconsistent. Some scenes are overly bright, others murky. I appreciate the attempt at a unique aesthetic, but the overall execution felt amateurish. A stronger director of photography could have elevated this quirky story.

I appreciated the show’s attempt to touch on mental health, especially through the grandpa’s storyline and Shun’s emotional struggles. But the way the female side character is written—as a bumbling, incompetent plot device—felt disrespectful. The resolution where she accidentally fumbles and saves the world undermines the whole tension. Also, the slow-building relationship between the leads is cute, but the lack of clear romantic progression until the last minute raises questions about consent and emotional development. Interesting but flawed.
