Lakan is a tender, slow-burning Filipino BL that takes you on an emotional journey from the bustling city to the raw, untamed beauty of the Philippine countryside. The story follows Caloy (aka Bulan), a young heir to an indigenous tribe burdened by duty and tradition, and John, a city man fleeing the pressures of modern life. They find themselves seeking refuge at the home of their childhood nanny, a wise matriarch who once cared for them both. In the quiet of the rural landscape, surrounded by ancient forests and close-knit communal life, they discover an unexpected connection that defies their separate worlds. But their fragile romance is tested not only by family expectations, tribal traditions, and John's arranged engagement, but also by the brutal force of nature when a devastating typhoon strikes. This series is a rare gem that blends cultural exploration, LGBTQ+ representation, and a genuine, grounded love story—brought to life by actors who are a real-life couple. With stunning natural scenery and a heartfelt narrative about resilience and belonging, Lakan offers an escape into a world where love and tradition collide.

I can't believe this is a real-life couple! Caloy and John have such natural sweetness—every glance and shy touch felt like I was watching actual love unfold. The scene where they finally hold hands under the stars? My heart melted. Yes, the production is rough, but the raw emotion more than makes up for it. This is Filipino BL at its most genuine.

I appreciated how Lakan respectfully portrays indigenous traditions and the pressures tribals face to uphold legacy. The story bravely tackles consent and duty: John's arranged engagement is resolved without villainizing the ex-fiancée, and Caloy's tribe eventually respects his choice. It's a nuanced take on identity and familial love. Would have loved more depth on the grandmother's backstory, though.

I really wanted to love this, but the pacing is painfully slow and there are obvious budget limitations—empty scenes, inconsistent audio, and several plot holes (who is Nanny Zeny to Caloy, really?). The typhoon arc feels shoehorned in, though I respect the real-life tragedy that inspired it. The leads have charm, but the writing needed tighter editing.

Despite a shoestring budget, Lakan captures the lush, primeval forests and golden rice fields of Nueva Ecija with a painterly eye. The color grading leans desaturated and earthy, which fits the rural mood perfectly. Some handheld shots feel shaky, but the wide landscapes of the typhoon aftermath are hauntingly beautiful. A visual love letter to the Philippine countryside.

The OST in Lakan is a hidden gem! There's a simple acoustic guitar theme that perfectly underscores the quiet, healing moments between the leads. The closing credits feature a heartfelt song performed by one of the side characters (the ex-boyfriend of Dita), and it's such a beautiful message about chasing dreams. Too bad the full OST isn't available on streaming—I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
