Love Thunder is a hauntingly romantic Japanese BL series that transcends time itself. Spanning three distinct eras—1983, the 1990s, and the present day—it follows the fated souls of Ao and Nagi, two young men who meet, fall deeply in love, and meet a tragic end under a crack of thunder, only to be reborn and repeat the cycle. Their first encounter in 1983 at a record store sparks an instant connection fueled by a shared love for Dvořák's New World Symphony, leading them to bury a time capsule meant for a future version of themselves. But a mysterious curse binds them to a repeating pattern of love and loss, with thunder as both a signal of their passion and an omen of their doom. Blending fantasy, music, and bittersweet romance, this short-form series packs an emotional punch despite its compact runtime, offering a visually poetic meditation on fate, devotion, and the ties that refuse to break.

I wanted to love this, but the story is a chaotic mess. The reincarnation concept is interesting, but the characters fall in love in one day and then die—over and over—with no room to breathe. The fantasy elements are barely explained, and the editing feels jerky. All aesthetics, no substance.

As a classical music lover, I was captivated from the first note. Dvořák's 9th Symphony becomes a character itself, haunting every scene. The actors convey deep devotion in such a short time, and the time capsule idea gave me chills. Yes, it's messy, but the emotional atmosphere is unforgettable.

I cried so much. Nagi and Ao are soulmates in the truest sense—across lifetimes, they choose each other again and again. The thunder moments are so symbolic and romantic. I didn't mind the fast pace because the emotions felt real and urgent. A hidden gem for hopeless romantics.

Visually, this series is a treat. The lighting in the 1983 scenes feels nostalgic and warm, while the modern segments are crisp and cold. The director clearly has an eye for composition. But the plot jumps around too much for my taste—it's a beautiful music video without a strong narrative spine.

I appreciate that they tried to tackle reincarnation, but the instant love trope raises red flags for me. These characters barely know each other before swearing eternal devotion, which feels both rushed and romanticized. The consent and power dynamics are left unexplored. Still, the performances are earnest.
