Returning for a second delectable season, 'What Did You Eat Yesterday?' continues the quietly revolutionary story of Shiro Kakei, a meticulous lawyer with a passion for thrifty cooking, and his charismatic hairdresser partner, Kenji Yabuki. Now in their fifties and over eight years into their relationship, the couple faces a new chapter filled with life's subtle but significant challenges: navigating aging parents, confronting workplace changes, and planning for retirement. But as always, their love is measured not in grand gestures, but in the comforting ritual of shared meals. Kenji’s loving complaints about Shiro’s extreme budgeting and Shiro’s gruff care wrapped in perfectly portioned bento boxes form the heart of their everyday life. This season deepens their bond as they confront the practical and emotional realities of being a long-term same-sex couple in Japan, from strained family acceptance to the legal tangles of inheritance. Yet, through house hunting, grocery shopping, and bickering over dinner, they face every hurdle with warmth and resilience. With its unhurried pace, humorous dialogues, and mouth-watering recipes, this slice-of-life drama offers a rare, deeply comforting look at mature, quiet, and steadfast love—proving that happiness is often found in the simple act of asking, 'What did you eat yesterday?'

This season made my heart so full. Kenji and Shiro have the most understated yet powerful chemistry I've ever seen—it's in the way he packs his bento, the tiny smile when Kenji compliments the miso soup. No big confessions, just the quiet comfort of being truly known. I was tearing up by the final episode. More of this, please!

I enjoyed the relaxed pace and the focus on domestic life, but the lack of any real narrative drive occasionally made it feel aimless. The subplot with the hair salon junior felt unnecessary and didn't add much. Still, the central relationship is so well-written that I kept watching. It just needs a bit more direction to hold my attention fully.

Visually, this show is a quiet masterpiece. The warm lighting in their apartment, the careful framing of every meal—each shot feels like a still life painting. The way the camera lingers on the steam rising from a simmering pot or the vibrant colors of supermarket produce adds a poetic layer to the storytelling. A feast for the eyes.

I appreciate how this season doesn't just show a happy couple but honestly explores the systemic barriers they face: the partnership certificate issue, the awkwardness with parents, the worry about inheritance. It's refreshing to see a BL that respects its characters' ages and treats their love with dignity, showing that commitment isn't just about romance but about building a life together against societal indifference.

As a long-time reader of the manga, I'm thrilled with how faithful this adaptation remains. The pacing, the dialogue, the small moments—they capture the spirit of Fumi Yoshinaga's work perfectly. I would have loved to see a few more side character arcs from the manga included, but the essence is there. A lovely translation from page to screen.
