In the tender and achingly relatable Japanese BL series 'I Cannot Reach You', we dive into the beautifully complicated world of high school first love. Meet Yamato Ohara (Maeda Kentaro), the effortlessly cool, brilliant, and handsome student who seems to have it all—except the one thing he truly desires: the heart of his childhood best friend, Kakeru Ashiya (Kashiwagi Haru). Kakeru is the complete opposite: a goofy, awkward, and self-deprecating sunshine boy who has always felt average in Yamato’s shadow. For years, Yamato has harbored a secret, all-consuming crush on Kakeru, watching him from a distance, memorizing every smile and laugh, but too terrified to confess and risk destroying their precious bond. Everything changes when Yamato finally musters the courage to admit his feelings, throwing Kakeru into a confusing whirlwind of emotions. How can the person he admires most see him as anything more than a friend? As Kakeru grapples with his own burgeoning feelings and feelings of unworthiness, the two boys navigate a minefield of awkward silences, stolen glances, and missed opportunities. This series masterfully captures the agonizing beauty of a slow-burn romance, where the deepest fear is not rejection, but the loss of a friendship that means the world. With its soft cinematography, evocative soundtrack, and heartfelt performances, 'I Cannot Reach You' is a poignant and nostalgic journey about the courage it takes to bridge the gap between friendship and something far more profound. It’s a story that will resonate with anyone who has ever loved from afar and prayed that the feeling might one day be returned.

OMG this drama gave me ALL the feels! The way Yamato looks at Kakeru is so full of longing, my heart couldn't take it. I loved that Kakeru isn't clueless—he figures out his feelings pretty early but struggles with his own insecurities. The chemistry between the leads is adorable, and the kissing scenes are so tender. I wish we got a few more episodes of them being a couple, but the finale still made me cry happy tears. If you love childhood friends to lovers, just watch it!

I see why people like it, but I found it frustratingly slow. The plot is basically 'Yamato pines, Kakeru is confused, and they get interrupted every single time they try to talk.' By episode 5, I was rolling my eyes at every near-confession that got ruined by a friend showing up. The acting is also hit or miss—Kashiwagi Haru is cute but overdoes the 'awkward' thing. That said, the soundtrack is nice and the ending is satisfying enough. It's fine for a lazy afternoon but not groundbreaking.

As a cinematography nerd, I was impressed by the visual storytelling. The soft lighting, the use of slow motion during emotional beats, and the way the camera lingers on the characters' eyes—it's all very thoughtfully done. The pastel color palette perfectly captures the dreamy, bittersweet tone of first love. My only complaint is that some shots are overexposed, but overall, it's a beautiful-looking show. Would recommend for anyone who appreciates aesthetics as much as plot.

I've read the manga, and I think this adaptation does it justice! The casting is perfect—Maeda Kentaro embodies Yamato's quiet intensity, and Kashiwagi Haru brings Kakeru's goofiness to life without being too cartoonish. They kept the iconic scenes (the kabedon, the rain confession) and the emotional core intact. Minor changes like expanding the side characters actually helped flesh out the world. My only nitpick is that the pacing feels slightly rushed in the back half, but for a 8-episode series, it's a solid adaptation.

The music in this drama is EVERYTHING! The main theme 'I Cannot Reach You' plays at just the right moments and gives me chills every time. The ending song is catchy and upbeat, capturing the youthful energy of the show. I also love the soft piano pieces during the emotional scenes—they really amplify the longing and heartache. I've been listening to the OST on repeat for weeks. A perfect soundtrack for a sweet romance.

I appreciated that this show tackles consent in a realistic way for teenagers. There's a scene where Yamato kisses Kakeru without clear permission, and Kakeru freezes—but later they talk it out and Yamato genuinely apologizes. It's a teachable moment about communication. I also liked that the female characters (Yamato's sister, Yui) are supportive without being love rivals. However, the constant interruptions felt like a lazy way to avoid conflict, and some of the 'kabedon' moments border on aggressive. Overall, a decent effort at portraying young love with awareness.

Okay, I know I'm not the target audience, but I came hoping for something with a bit more tension or stakes. This is purely a slow romance with zero action, no villains, and barely any conflict aside from 'he likes him but is scared.' If you want a relaxer, fine, but I was bored. The only exciting part was a brief punch scene—that had some actual energy. Otherwise, it's all soft looks and long pauses. Not for me, but I can see why it works for romance fans.

I'm a sucker for side couples, so I was a bit disappointed that this drama focuses only on the main pair. However, the supporting characters—especially Hosuke (the blonde friend) and Yamato's sister—are so well-written that they almost feel like a secondary love story. Hosuke giving advice and giggling at their awkwardness was a highlight. I just wish we got a B-plot romance! Still, the main couple's chemistry is sweet, and the friend group dynamic is refreshingly wholesome.
