In this groundbreaking 2009 Korean short film, we meet Min Soo, a soldier on leave, and his devoted boyfriend Seok Yi, who have been secretly navigating their relationship under the shadow of military service and societal judgment. Their long-awaited reunion in a quiet town takes an unexpected turn when Min Soo's mother suddenly appears, forcing the couple to hide their true feelings behind a simple lie: 'We're just friends.' Over the course of a few intense days, the film tenderly explores their quiet moments of stolen affection, the palpable fear of exposure in a deeply conservative society, and the painful decision to either remain hidden or embrace their love openly. Blending realistic slice-of-life moments with a dash of musical whimsy, 'Just Friends?' captures the emotional tightrope walk between devotion and survival, culminating in a hopeful, defiant celebration of queer identity and the courage to say 'boyfriend' out loud.

I'm absolutely melting. Lee Je Hoon and Yeon Woo Jin's chemistry is everything I've ever wanted in a BL. Their kisses are so passionate and real, not those dead-fish pecks you see in most dramas. The way Min Soo holds Seok Yi's hand under the table – my heart can't take it. This is pure, tender love fighting against the world, and I'm here for every second of it.

I appreciate the film's courage and the actors' commitment, but at 29 minutes it tries to cram too many ideas – the mother subplot, the military homophobia, a bizarre song montage. The editing is choppy, and some scenes (the mom talking about her chest) feel utterly unnecessary. It's more of a promising sketch than a fully realized story.

This short film is a vital historical document that shows how Korean society policed queer love, especially within the military. The scene where Seok Yi must erase 'lover' from the visitor form is gut-wrenching. I'm glad the ending offers hope without erasing the systemic oppression. The characters' internalized homophobia is handled with nuance, though the musical numbers feel tonally jarring.

For an indie short, the cinematography is surprisingly evocative – the fence scene with the mother bathed in soft light is beautifully composed. The color palette shifts from muted, anxious tones in Cheorwon to warmer hues in Seoul. That said, the quick cuts and low-budget framing detract from the immersive mood. Still, a visually ambitious little gem.

The opening folk-pop song, sung by the actors themselves, instantly charmed me – it's catchy and vulnerable. The later heartfelt ballad during Min Soo's confession to his mother is emotionally resonant, even if the subtitles didn't cover the lyrics. The music gives the film a dreamy, almost musical-like quality that I found endearing, though I know it divides viewers.
