Just Be Gentle is a visually arresting and emotionally raw Taiwanese short film that explores love, loss, and longing through a stream-of-consciousness narrative. As a young man lies on his deathbed, his final moments are a kaleidoscope of memories, flashing back to two pivotal relationships that defined his life. Through lingering kisses, tender touches, and moments of intense intimacy, he drifts between past and present, reliving the joy, pain, and desire that shaped him. This is not a traditional love story—it’s a meditation on the fragility of human connection and the way we hold onto the people who have touched us. With its artistic, almost dreamlike cinematography and unflinchingly sensual scenes, the film challenges viewers to sit with discomfort and beauty alike. A daring entry in Taiwanese queer cinema, Just Be Gentle is a poignant, mature, and unforgettable experience for those ready for something deeply introspective.

This film wrecked me in the best way. The fleeting moments of tenderness between the leads felt so real, and the erotic scenes were shot with such vulnerability. Yes, it’s artsy and nonlinear, but if you let yourself sink into its mood, it’s incredibly moving.

I appreciate the attempt at poetic storytelling, but it’s too fragmented to hold my attention. The narrative barely exists—just a series of intimate vignettes without clear progression. The explicit scenes feel gratuitous rather than meaningful. Not for me.

Visually stunning. The use of soft focus, warm color grading, and close-ups on skin textures gives the film a tactile, dreamy quality. Every frame feels carefully composed. The storytelling takes a backseat, but as a cinematic experience, it’s mesmerizing.

I admire the film’s willingness to explore desire and mortality without apology, but the power dynamics in the sexual encounters made me uncomfortable. There’s a lack of clear consent signaling in the flashbacks, which feels problematic given the dying protagonist’s vulnerable state. Worth discussing, but hard to enjoy.
