In 2005's 'Innocent', 17-year-old Eric (Simon Chung) is uprooted from his Hong Kong home when his family immigrates to Canada—a move that plunges him into a whirlwind of cultural dislocation and personal reckoning. Struggling to navigate a foreign high school, a language barrier, and the suffocating isolation of suburban life, Eric finds himself drawn to a classmate in ways he can't quite name. As he grapples with his burgeoning homosexuality, each stolen glance and awkward encounter becomes a lifeline in a sea of alienation. Director sensitively captures every quiet moment of longing and fear, painting a raw, unhurried portrait of adolescence at the crossroads of identity. This indie gem eschews melodrama for authenticity, focusing on the internal earthquake of a teenager who must not only adapt to a new country but also accept the person he's becoming. With its tender realism and emotional honesty, 'Innocent' remains a poignant, understated classic of early LGBTQ+ cinema.

I was completely swept away by the quiet chemistry between Eric and his crush. Every stolen glance felt like a secret just for us. Sure, it's slow, but that's exactly what makes the yearning so real. A hidden gem that deserves more love.

I wanted to love it, but the pacing is glacial and nothing really happens for long stretches. The cultural conflict is interesting, but the script lacks drive. The ending feels abrupt and unresolved. For an indie film, it has heart, but not enough story.

As an exploration of a gay teen's isolation in a homophobic immigrant household, this film is painfully accurate. The infidelity subplot is handled with nuance, not glamorization. I dock points for the lack of clear consent conversations, but the overall message of self-acceptance is powerful.

The washed-out color palette perfectly mirrors Eric's emotional numbness, and the use of empty school hallways is great visual storytelling. But the handheld camera work is distracting in places, and some scenes are poorly lit. Aesthetically ambitious for a low-budget indie, if imperfect.
