I'm Here & 12 Years is a tender, low-budget Chinese BL film that traces the decade-long journey of two college students, Li Xiang and Gu Yi, from a chance meeting before Driver's Ed to an enduring love. Adapted from the novel 'Our Twelve Years, A Cycle, This Is a Legend,' the movie unfolds as a series of seemingly disconnected yet emotionally charged scenes—a shared umbrella, a heartfelt restaurant exchange using handwritten cards, moments of silent longing. What makes this film special is its clever narrative structure: each fragment is masterfully tied together in a poignant, twist-filled ending that recontextualizes the entire love story. Despite rough audio and visual quality, the raw emotion shines through, especially in the quiet, romantic gestures. The film captures the bittersweet beauty of youth, friendship, and the courage it takes to hold onto someone for twelve years. With a surprisingly stellar soundtrack featuring Adam Lambert and Norah Jones, this is a hidden gem for fans who value emotional truth over polish.

I cried at the restaurant scene with the cards – it was the most romantic thing I've ever seen! The chemistry between the leads is so natural, and that ending twist made everything click. Yes, the audio is bad, but I didn't care. Pure love story goals.

The plot is a jumble of disjointed scenes that only make sense at the very end. If you're not patient, you'll be lost for most of the runtime. The acting is okay, but the terrible sound design and visible boom mics really pulled me out. The ending is clever, but it's not worth sitting through that production quality.

I stayed for the soundtrack alone! Adam Lambert 'Ghost Town' and Norah Jones 'Don't Know Why' in a Chinese BL? Mind blown. The music choices perfectly underline the melancholy and hope. If only the audio mix was better – sometimes the wind overpowered the songs. Still, a treat for music fans.

I appreciate the attempt to show a same-sex relationship in a Chinese context from 2015, but the film feels dated and shy about physical intimacy. The characters barely touch, and the central conflict is resolved too conveniently. It's more a 'friendship with longing' than a full romance, but it's still a positive representation for its time.
