In the poignant Filipino short film *Icarus*, we follow Kenneth, a college student trapped in a lopsided 'friends with benefits' relationship with his best friend, Rayu. While Kenneth pours his heart and soul into every encounter, Rayu remains emotionally detached, offering only physical affection. The fragile balance of their arrangement shatters after a single, unintended mistake, forcing Kenneth to confront the painful truth: he is flying too close to a sun that will never warm him. Directed by Angel Aguihap, this award-winning Cebuano-language drama uses the Icarus myth as a powerful metaphor for the dangers of giving everything to someone who cannot love you back. With raw, naturalistic performances—especially from Andrei Desales as the heartbreakingly vulnerable Kenneth—the film captures the suffocating weight of unrequited love and the quiet devastation of realizing you are just a placeholder. A bittersweet, visually stunning meditation on boundaries, self-worth, and the cost of loving without conditions, *Icarus* is a must-watch for fans of emotionally charged LGBTQ+ cinema.

I'm absolutely wrecked. Kenneth's pain was so real I felt it in my chest. The way he begged for even a scrap of love from Rayu—it's the kind of acting that makes you forget you're watching a film. The director understood the ache of loving someone who doesn't love you back. This is a masterpiece of queer heartbreak. I cried for twenty minutes after it ended.

For a student short film, the visual storytelling is stunning. The lighting in every scene mirrors Kenneth's emotional state—soft in moments of hope, harsh when reality sets in. The use of the Icarus metaphor through visual motifs (like the sun glinting off glass) is subtle but powerful. It's rare to see this level of intentional framing in a short. Beautifully shot.

I appreciate how this film doesn't romanticize the 'friends with benefits' trope. It critically examines the emotional imbalance and the lack of clear boundaries. Kenneth's suffering is a direct result of a dynamic where affection is given but not reciprocated, and the film doesn't shy away from showing the damage. A valuable cautionary tale about self-worth in queer relationships.

While the acting is solid, the short feels a bit repetitive. We see Kenneth cry and pout multiple times without much narrative progression. The metaphor of Icarus is spelled out a little too on-the-nose for my taste. It's well-made for a student project, but as a 'film' it lacks dramatic pacing. It's more of an emotional vignette than a complete story.

The background score is minimal but effective. There's one recurring piano melody that plays during Kenneth's most vulnerable moments—it's haunting and perfectly underscores the loneliness. I wish there was a full OST release. Music is used sparingly, but when it appears, it hits hard. Combined with the quiet ambient sounds of the dorm room, it creates an intimate atmosphere.
