In this poignant Taiwanese short film, Kai and Jay are a young gay couple living a secret but tender romance. As graduation approaches, their hidden relationship faces its greatest test: Kai feels called to follow his father’s path and enter a Catholic seminary, while Jay chases a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train abroad as a soccer player. Neither has told the other of their plans, and when the truth comes out through a mutual friend, the dream they built together begins to crack. Set against the backdrop of a conservative church community and filmed just years before Taiwan’s historic marriage equality ruling, 'Icarus' uses the myth of the boy who flew too close to the sun as a haunting metaphor for love, ambition, and the painful choices we make when two futures cannot coexist. With quiet performances and a deliberate, moody atmosphere, this 2017 gem captures the raw ache of young love colliding with faith, family, and self-discovery—and asks whether some bonds are strong enough to survive the fall.

I cried so hard. Kai and Jay's love is so pure and doomed—it broke me. The way they look at each other in that one scene by the window… my heart can't take it. Even though the ending is ambiguous, I choose to believe they find a way back to each other. A beautiful, aching short film.

The premise is strong, but the execution felt rushed. We never really see why these two fell in love—just that they're in conflict. The mutual friend is convenient, and the religious angle is handled with kid gloves. Still, for a short film, it packs more emotional punch than many full dramas. I just wish the script had more breathing room.

What struck me most is how the film handles the double bind of queer faith: Kai's dream to become a pastor is genuine, not a tool of oppression. Yet the church's homophobia forces him to choose between his vocation and his love. It's a nuanced look at systemic conflict rather than blaming individual characters—refreshing and deeply sad.

Visually, this is stunning. The warm, amber tones of the church contrast beautifully with the cold blue of the night scenes. The shot of Kai drawing the falling Icarus while the camera lingers on his hands is pure poetry. A few handheld moments felt shaky, but overall it's a masterclass in lighting a short film on a budget.

The use of Gregorian chants and church hymns as the recurring soundscape is genius. It creates a constant, oppressive reminder of the religious world that surrounds Kai. The silence during the most painful arguments speaks just as loudly. I wish the original score had been released separately—I'd listen to it on repeat.
