In the quietly profound Japanese film *I Need You*, we follow the life of a gay man named Kaito, who has built a warm, loving existence with his devoted partner and his supportive mother. His world is one of gentle domesticity and acceptance, a fragile sanctuary from society's lingering shadows. When Kaito reconnects with an old friend from his youth, he finds himself drawn into the complex and painful family troubles that have haunted his friend for years. This unexpected reunion forces Kaito to confront the very nature of isolation and what it truly means to be lonely, even when surrounded by love. As he navigates his friend's crisis, the film delicately explores the bonds we choose versus the ones we are born into, and the silent, aching spaces between connection and solitude. With tender performances and a keen observational eye, *I Need You* is a heartfelt meditation on the quiet courage of opening your heart to others, and the profound realization that sometimes, the greatest act of love is simply being present.

I was immediately drawn into the soft, almost hazy color palette and the deliberate pacing of every scene. The way the camera lingers on Kaito's face during moments of quiet reflection is masterful—truly a film that understands visual storytelling. A hidden gem for anyone who loves cinema that breathes.

The love between Kaito and his partner is so beautifully understated yet deeply felt—every small touch and shared glance felt like a warm hug. Even though the drama focuses on friendship troubles, the foundation of their relationship made my heart ache in the best way. This is real, grown-up love.

I appreciate the film’s sincerity, but the pacing dragged in the middle and the old friend’s family issues felt a bit cliché and underdeveloped. The emotional climax didn't quite land for me because the narrative threads felt loose. Still, the lead performance is strong enough to carry it.

What struck me most was how the film normalizes a gay relationship within a family context without making a big political statement—the mother is simply loving, the partner is simply present. It’s refreshing to see queer joy portrayed as quiet and ordinary, even as the story grapples with deeper loneliness. A solid, sensitive watch.

As someone new to Japanese BL, I found this film incredibly accessible and moving. The acting felt so natural, especially in the scenes between Kaito and his friend—the pain of reconnecting after years apart was palpable. It made me cry in a good way. Definitely recommend for anyone who loves stories about found family.
