In the bustling heart of early 2000s Hong Kong, university student Rick faces a devastating reality when his conservative parents discover his homosexuality and throw him out of the family home. Desperate and alone, he finds shelter with his straight friend Mark, a kind-hearted young man who offers him a temporary roof. As they share cramped quarters and late-night conversations, Rick and Mark navigate the complex terrain of friendship, unspoken feelings, and societal judgment. This poignant 50-minute film captures the raw emotional journey of self-acceptance and the quiet courage it takes to live authentically. Through intimate, slice-of-life moments and the city’s vibrant street sounds, the story explores the clash between family duty and personal identity, the warmth of found family, and the painful reality of homophobia. With a tender, understated romance at its core, "I Am Not What You Want" is a heartfelt snapshot of queer life in Hong Kong that resonates with universal themes of love, loss, and resilience.

I watched this because I love slow-burn friendships turning into something more, and this film delivered that quiet ache perfectly. The scene where Mark hesitates before touching Rick's hand said so much without words. Yes, it's short and low-budget, but their chemistry felt so real. I just wish we got one more moment of them together at the end.

I appreciate the attempt at a realistic queer story, but the pacing is incredibly uneven. The 50-minute runtime feels like a rushed TV pilot rather than a cohesive film. The subplot with Rick's family is dropped halfway through, and Mark's motivations are never explored. It's a decent time capsule, but as a narrative it falls flat.

This film is a vital document of queer experience in Hong Kong at a time when such stories were almost invisible. I appreciate that it doesn't shy away from the harsh reality of homophobic violence—not physical, but emotional exile. Rick's journey isn't a fairy tale; it's a survival story. The lack of explicit romance actually strengthens its commentary on internalized shame. Highly recommended for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ social history.

The cinematography is raw and handheld, which adds a documentary-like authenticity to the cramped apartments and neon-lit streets. There's a beautiful moment where rain streaks down a window while Rick stares out—it's pure visual poetry. But the overall production value is very low, with some awkward cuts and flat lighting. Still, the moody Hong Kong atmosphere was worth the watch for me.

The soundtrack is sparse but perfectly matched—mostly ambient city sounds and a soft piano theme that plays during the most tender moments. It reminded me of old Wong Kar-wai films, though much more modest. The lack of a proper score actually makes the silence between characters feel heavier. I'd love to find out who composed that little piano motif; it's stuck in my head.
