I Am is a poignant three-part LGBTQ+ anthology series from Singapore that intimately explores the diverse experiences of queer individuals navigating love, identity, and societal pressures. Each self-contained short film offers a unique lens into the community: Part 1 follows Shawn and Darren, two young men serving National Service, as their friendship deepens into something more tender and forbidden against a backdrop of military discipline. The series stands out for its raw, slice-of-life storytelling that captures fleeting moments of connection, heartache, and self-discovery. With no overarching plot but a shared emotional thread, I Am uses its brevity to deliver powerful, authentic vignettes that resonate long after the credits roll. It’s a quiet, beautiful celebration of queer resilience and the courage to be seen—especially within Singapore’s conservative context. Perfect for viewers who love intimate, character-driven dramas with a deeply human heart.

I stumbled upon this little series and it completely stole my heart. The chemistry in Part 1 between Shawn and Darren felt so real and raw—I could feel their hesitation and longing. Even with just three episodes, it left me teary-eyed. This is exactly the kind of gentle, emotional BL I crave.

As an anthology, it’s uneven—Part 2 dragged a bit compared to the others. The production value is clearly low-budget, but the sincerity of the storytelling mostly makes up for it. I appreciated the attempt to show different queer experiences without melodrama. Solid, not groundbreaking.

The cinematography surprised me—soft natural lighting, intimate framing, and the use of Singapore’s urban landscapes as a quiet backdrop really enhanced the emotional tone. Each short felt like a visual poem. I wish there were more episodes just to see more of this aesthetic.

What I loved most is how the series handles consent and mutual respect—every relationship develops naturally without pressure or toxic tropes. In Part 3, the characters explicitly talk about their boundaries, which was refreshing. It’s a small but important step for queer narratives in conservative contexts.

The background score is minimal but effective—a few acoustic guitar pieces and ambient sounds that perfectly match the quiet, reflective mood. I wish there was a proper OST release because one melody from Part 1 keeps playing in my head. It really elevated the emotional beats.
