HIStory2: Right or Wrong (2018) is a groundbreaking Taiwanese BL series that ditches typical campus fluff for a tender, thought-provoking story about second chances, family, and the courage to love openly. The drama introduces us to Shi Yi Jie, a cynical, disorganized associate professor of anthropology who is a divorced single father to his precocious seven-year-old daughter, YoYo. His life is a chaotic mess of teaching, parenting, and avoiding emotional connections—until he crosses paths with Fei Sheng Zhe, a bright and warm-hearted college student who quietly recognizes the professor from a brief, forgotten encounter years earlier. When Fei Sheng Zhe lands a job as YoYo’s tutor, the three form an unlikely, endearing trio. What begins as a professional arrangement slowly blossoms into something deeper as Shi Yi Jie finds himself drawn to Fei Sheng Zhe’s patience and sincerity, and Fei Sheng Zhe begins to see past the professor’s prickly exterior to a lonely man desperate for love. But their growing bond faces real-world hurdles: a significant age gap (12 years), the taboo of a student-teacher dynamic, deep-seated insecurities from Fei Sheng Zhe’s past bullying as a gay youth, and the reappearance of Shi Yi Jie’s manipulative ex-wife. What makes Right or Wrong truly special is its refusal to shy away from these challenges. Instead, it tackles them head-on with refreshing maturity, advocating for open communication, consent, and self-acceptance. The series also breaks new ground by centering a romance around gay fatherhood—showing how Shi Yi Jie learns to be a better dad while falling in love, and how Fei Sheng Zhe becomes not just a partner but a co-parent to YoYo. With a heartwarming, optimistic tone and a focus on building a loving, unconventional family, Right or Wrong delivers a deeply satisfying, emotionally resonant journey that will leave you smiling long after the credits roll.

I am absolutely in love with this show! The way Shi Yi Jie just falls head over heels for Fei Sheng Zhe and doesn't care what anyone thinks is so refreshing. And that little girl YoYo is the cutest kid ever – she really makes the 'found family' plot so believable. The chemistry between the leads is soft and warm, not super intense, but that worked perfectly for their story. I cried happy tears when Fei finally stood up for himself. This is the kind of BL that makes you believe in love again. Highly recommend to anyone who wants a feel-good, wholesome drama.

I understand the hype, but I have to be honest: the student-teacher relationship here is a hard pill to swallow. The show tries to brush past the power imbalance by making Fei Sheng Zhe seem super mature, but he's still a 19-year-old student. The professor just decides he's in love way too fast with almost no internal conflict about ethics. Also, the editing in the first two episodes is choppy, and some scenes jump awkwardly. The child actress is great, and the family moments are sweet, but as a plot, it relies too much on convenience and skipping the uncomfortable conversations.

Okay, so there's no car chases or explosions, but you know what? This series is action-packed with EMOTIONS! Seriously, the way Shi Yi Jie goes to bat for his man against the ex-wife and society – that's the real drama. I loved the scene where he declares to his ex that Fei is his. The pacing kept me on the edge of my seat (in a good way). If you want a BL that feels like a romantic comedy with real stakes about family and acceptance, this is it. Also, the little girl is an absolute badass with her sass.

The music in Right or Wrong is an underrated highlight. The ending theme is so catchy and emotional – I've had it on repeat for weeks. It perfectly captures the bittersweet hopefulness of the story. The background score during the park scenes and the proposal moment really elevates the emotions. I wish there were more official instrumental tracks released, but what we got is solid. The music doesn't overpower the dialogue, it just wraps around you like a warm hug. Definitely one of the better OSTs in the HIStory anthology.

I appreciate what this show tried to do, but I have some concerns. On the plus side, it normalizes gay fatherhood beautifully and the communication between the leads is admirable – Fei's fear of public rejection is handled with sensitivity. However, the student-teacher power dynamic is never fully interrogated. Shi Yi Jie is his professor, and Fei is a freshman. The show frames it as 'love conquers all' without addressing the inherent vulnerability of a student in that situation. I also wish the show had spent more time on Fei's internalized homophobia rather than just hinting at it. Still, a good conversation starter about ethics in BL.

I haven't read an original novel for this specific story, but as someone who watches a ton of BL adaptations, I can tell Right or Wrong is a rare gem that knows exactly what it wants to be. It's not trying to be epic; it's a slice-of-life about two dads and their kid. The script feels like it could be part of the HIStory universe's most grounded installment. I love that they didn't drag out the ex-wife drama – she's gone quickly, which lets the focus stay on building the family. Zero wasted screen time. My only tiny critique: the kissing could use a bit more passion, but the emotional payoff is perfect.

Visually, Right or Wrong is very pleasant but not groundbreaking. The lighting is warm and soft, which fits the family-oriented tone. I liked the use of natural light in the apartment scenes – it made everything feel intimate and lived-in. However, the camera work is quite static; there are few dynamic shots or creative angles. The color grading leans yellow/golden, perfect for the 'romantic optimism' vibe. Costuming is simple but effective – the professor's messy sweaters vs. Fei's tidy hoodies subtly show their personalities. Not a masterpiece of cinema, but competent and fitting.

Okay, I know the main couple is the focus, but can we talk about Fei's best friend? She is the REAL MVP! The way she supports him without ever becoming a love rival or a jealous stereotype – that's how you write a female character in BL. She had more chemistry with Fei's roommate (that goofy side couple) than most main pairs in other shows. Their bickering was adorable. I wish the side couple got a spin-off, honestly! But even just those few scenes added so much life to the series. The main couple's story is sweet, but the side characters made it feel like a real community.
