Ye Yu Wei is a quiet transfer student with a secret: he's a popular online romance novelist writing under a female pen name. His new deskmate, He Cheng Han, is a talkative, cat-loving romantic who unwittingly becomes Yu Wei's biggest fan—believing the author 'Ye Wei' is his ideal woman. Despite their contrasting personalities, an unlikely friendship blossoms as they tutor each other and share their dreams. Cheng Han's warm, persistent affection slowly chips away at Yu Wei's guarded exterior, leading to a heartfelt confession that catches both their mothers' attention. When Yu Wei's mother disapproves, fearing societal judgment, Cheng Han's mother steps in with an unexpected alliance, advocating for their sons' happiness. This gentle, character-driven film navigates first love, self-acceptance, and the courage to be vulnerable—all while a fluffy cat watches over their budding romance. With surprising verbal confirmations of their feelings (rare for a censored Chinese BL), *His Cat* offers a quiet, uplifting story about finding your person and the families who learn to support them.

I'm a sucker for soft BLs and this one absolutely melted me. Cheng Han is such a sweetheart—his constant chatter and love for his cat made me smile, and the way he looks at Yu Wei? My heart! The confession scene had me screaming because they actually say it out loud. No kiss needed; their hug said everything. If you want a feel-good romance with zero angst, this is it.

I wanted to love it, but the production quality is a mess. The dubbing is painfully mismatched, the pacing drags for the first half, and Yu Wei's character barely develops. The mother conflict is resolved too conveniently. That said, the second half does have charm, and I'll admit the parents' acceptance plot is nice—but it doesn't fix the technical flaws.

For a censored Chinese BL, this film is quietly revolutionary. The leads explicitly consent to a relationship ('Do you want to be together with me?' 'Yes'), and both mothers actively support them—Cheng Han's mom even confronts Yu Wei's mom to defend their bond. It's a powerful depiction of allyship and healthy communication. However, Yu Wei's initial passivity and the rushed resolution of his mother's homophobia could have been handled with more depth.

I have mixed feelings about the cinematography. Yu Wei's room is beautifully cozy—the warm lighting and cluttered desk really sell his writer vibe. But the outdoor scenes feel flat, and some shots are oddly framed. The color palette is pleasant but nothing special. If you're looking for visual poetry, this won't deliver, but the domestic softness between the leads is nicely captured.

The background music is okay—a few gentle piano tracks that fit the mood, but nothing memorable. I was hoping for a standout song to replay, but the OST is largely forgettable. The dubbing also overpowers the audio mixing at times, which is a shame. Still, the cat's purring sound effects were unexpectedly endearing.
