Hyo-jeong has been waiting for her boyfriend Won-jae for ten long years while he studied abroad in France, dreaming of the day he’ll finally keep his promise to marry her. But when Won-jae returns to Korea, he brings along a secret that shatters her world: he has fallen in love with a man named Dong-hwa. What follows is a poignant, messy exploration of love, identity, and the painful choice between loyalty and self-truth. As Hyo-jeong struggles to understand what went wrong, she finds herself drawn into an unexpected connection with Dong-hwa, leading to a tangled love triangle that challenges every preconception about relationships and sexuality. This 2009 South Korean indie film doesn’t shy away from the ugliness of jealousy, the warmth of genuine affection, or the quiet desperation of clinging to a fading dream. With realistic performances and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, *Hello My Love* offers a raw, emotional journey that asks whether love can ever be neatly categorized – or if it’s always, in the end, a beautiful mess.

I know this movie is messy and painful, but that's exactly why I loved it. The chemistry between Won-jae and Dong-hwa broke my heart – you could see they were meant for each other, but the world got in the way. The music had me crying by the halfway mark. Yes, it hurts, but isn't that what real love feels like sometimes?

The acting is fine, but the story is a train wreck. The female lead's sudden threat of suicide and then sleeping with the guy her boyfriend loves? That's not complexity, that's just lazy writing to create drama. The ending is a cop-out – they couldn't commit to a gay ending, so it's a vague 'maybe they're all together?' mess. Skip it.

I appreciate that a Korean film in 2009 addressed bisexuality and same-sex love, but the way it treats consent is appalling. The female lead coerces Dong-hwa into sex out of jealousy, and that's framed as a 'moment of connection.' The gay relationship is constantly portrayed as shameful and doomed. This film needed a lot more sensitivity and a lot less homophobia cloaked as realism.

I will defend this film forever based on the music alone. Every scene is elevated by those haunting piano chords and the delicate, sorrowful vocal track that plays during the climax. The score perfectly captures the ache of waiting and the fear of losing someone. I bought the OST online and listen to it when I need a good cry.

I know there's no original novel for this film, but as a piece of early Korean BL cinema, it's an important artifact. Yes, the love triangle is infuriating, and the ending is frustratingly ambiguous, but you have to remember the social climate of 2009. This movie did what it could. The performances are stellar, and the emotional core is real. Watch it for context, not for satisfaction.
