In the gritty, rain-slicked streets of Chongqing, struggling painter Su He teeters on the edge of creative desperation. With a major exhibition looming, he needs a spark—something raw and honest. That spark arrives in the form of Er Meng, a fragile, enigmatic boy he encounters while searching for a nude model. What begins as a transactional arrangement for artistic inspiration slowly unravels into a complex, unspoken bond. The film weaves a quiet, melancholic romance against a backdrop of societal repression and personal debt. Su He's growing obsession with Er Meng blurs the line between art and life, forcing him to confront feelings he cannot name. Yet the narrative refuses easy answers, leaving space for interpretation. *Hard to Give Up* is a bold, deeply emotional Chinese BL film that bravely tackles censorship and delivers a hauntingly beautiful, if ambiguous, meditation on love, sacrifice, and the lies we tell ourselves.

The story starts strong but the ending completely lost me. That monologue about 'we are not lovers' feels like a cop-out, not a clever ambiguity. Either the translation is terrible or the filmmakers chickened out. Why build such intense chemistry only to deny it? A frustrating watch with a few beautifully acted scenes, but overall a muddled mess.

I loved the raw, unspoken love between Su He and Er Meng. Every time they shared a quiet moment, my heart ached. Yes, the ending is confusing and the censorship robbed us of some crucial scenes, but the emotion is real. If you can handle an open-ended conclusion, this is a hidden gem of Chinese BL.

Visually stunning. The way the cinematography uses the grimy streets of Chongqing and the warm, cluttered studio to reflect Su He's inner conflict is brilliant. I didn't mind the censorship so much because the camera tells the story through glances and silences. The music cues are also perfectly placed. Art direction alone makes this worth watching.

This film tries to tackle difficult themes but fumbles badly. The attempted rape scene is handled off-screen yet still feels exploitative, and the power imbalance between the painter (older, wealthier, with debts holding the boy) is never critically examined. The ambiguous ending only adds to the discomfort. I appreciate the effort at realism, but the lack of clear consent dialogue is troubling.

As an adaptation of the original web novel, the film cuts out many layers of the story. The novel's explicit gay romance is reduced to almost nothing, and the ending in the book is far more definitive. I get that censorship forced changes, but compared to the source material, this feels hollow. Still, if you haven't read the novel, you might enjoy the mood.
