Cha Jung Woo was once a promising writer with a bright future—until he blew the whistle on corruption among his seniors in the publishing industry. Blacklisted and stripped of his career, he retreats into a ghostwriting existence under the possessive protection of his boyfriend, Jung Hyun (played by VIXX’s Leo). Three years later, a chance encounter with sunny, persistent editor Tae Young reignites Jung Woo’s passion for his craft. As Tae Young pulls him out of his shell, a complicated love triangle emerges, forcing Jung Woo to choose between the supposedly safe shelter of Jung Hyun and the liberating warmth of Tae Young. But secrets linger—Jung Hyun’s control runs deeper than it seems, and the question of who truly wants Jung Woo to succeed hangs over every kiss. A moody, slow-burn melodrama that prioritizes psychological tension over traditional romance, Happy Ending Romance offers a nuanced look at gaslighting, creative freedom, and the courage to rewrite one’s own story.

I came for Leo but stayed for Ha Jong Woo. His smile literally made me emotional—every scene with him and Jung Woo felt so warm and hopeful. Yes, the kisses were frustratingly stiff, but the slow-burn flutter of Tae Young coaxing Jung Woo out of his shell? That got me. I wanted more romantic payoff, but the tension was real.

This drama expects you to piece together a puzzle without giving you half the pieces. The first two episodes are a mess of random flashbacks and confusing timelines. And can someone explain how a writer in 2022 can be 'blacklisted' when self-publishing exists? That plot hole ruined the entire premise for me. I wanted to like it, but the logic just wasn't there.

Finally, a BL willing to examine how 'love' can be a cage. Jung Hyun’s gaslighting and possessiveness are disturbingly well-portrayed, and I appreciated that the narrative didn't romanticize his control—it showed the damage. The show asks hard questions about what it means to support someone versus own them. That’s rare and valuable, even if the execution was rough around the edges.

Forget the plot holes—look at the color grading. Jung Woo’s world is desaturated, washed-out beige and grey, and when Tae Young enters, hints of gold and blue creep in. That visual storytelling is chef’s kiss. The editing may be choppy, but the cinematography knows exactly what it's doing. A treat for the eyes, if not for the brain.

I will admit I started watching because of Leo’s OST, and the music does not disappoint. That recurring melancholic piano theme? Stuck in my head for days. The song placement is a bit repetitive (same track four times an episode), but the emotional beats it underscores are genuinely affecting. Leo’s vocals are honey—too bad his acting couldn't match.
