Hanging Out is a landmark Filipino web series that offers a refreshingly authentic and nuanced look at the lives of gay millennials in Manila. The story begins when David, a young man navigating the modern dating scene, meets Adrian through a hookup app. What starts as a casual encounter evolves into a deeper connection as David is welcomed into Adrian's tight-knit circle of friends. Across six concise episodes, the series weaves together vignettes of friendship, romance, and self-discovery, tackling real-world issues like HIV anxiety, the use of dating apps, and the complexities of coming out in a predominantly Catholic society. Unlike typical fantastical BL dramas, Hanging Out prioritizes genuine conversations and emotional honesty over elaborate plot twists. The central romance between David and Adrian unfolds slowly, built on quiet moments of vulnerability and shared laughter. With its indie soundtrack, naturalistic performances, and a focus on everyday struggles and joys, this series captures the bittersweet reality of finding love and community in your late twenties. It's a tender, groundbreaking portrait of queer life in the Philippines that resonates long after the credits roll.

I absolutely adored the chemistry between David and Adrian! Their conversations felt so natural and I was rooting for them from the start. Sure, the episodes were short, but every minute was packed with genuine emotion. This is the kind of slow-burn romance I live for – no cheesy fan service, just real people falling in love.

I appreciate the historical significance, but the storytelling felt rushed with only 12-minute episodes. The main character's motivations were unclear, and the ending left me confused. I wanted to like it more, but it’s a decent effort for a first attempt that could have been much stronger with better pacing.

This series is a must-watch for anyone interested in authentic LGBTQ+ representation. It tackles hookup culture, HIV stigma, and the reality of being gay in a conservative Catholic country without sensationalism. It’s not a typical BL fantasy but a grounded slice-of-life that respects the complexities of queer identity. A true gem.

I was pleasantly surprised by the indie pop soundtrack! The closing track 'Twenty Years From Now' is incredibly catchy and perfectly captures the bittersweet emotions of the story. It's a shame it's not on Spotify. The music elevated every scene and I still hum that tune weeks later.

For a low-budget web series, the direction has a charming, intimate feel. The focus on natural lighting and handheld shots makes you feel like you're hanging out with the characters – fitting for the title! It’s not flashy, but it serves the story's grounded tone. The Manila streets and living rooms become characters themselves.
