In this wildly original and visually stunning Hong Kong BL film, a young soldier's ghost finds himself unshackled from the grave and free to roam the world. Rather than seeking vengeance or unfinished business, he embarks on a fantastical, hedonistic pilgrimage across multiple countries, collecting other lost and wandering souls along the way. Together, this ragtag group of specters discovers the simple, profound joy of being alive—even in death. From neon-lit cityscapes to serene rural landscapes, the film is a vibrant travelogue that explores themes of queer joy, found family, and the liberating power of letting go. Anchored by a soulful performance from Scud Cheng and the tender chemistry between the lead ghost and a mysterious wanderer, this is a ghost story unlike any other. It’s not about fear—it’s about fun, freedom, and the love that transcends even the afterlife. A perfect entry point for newcomers to BL cinema, Ghosts Just Want to Have Fun is a heartfelt, charming, and sometimes cheeky celebration of life after life.

I went in expecting a typical ghost movie and came out with my heart full. The chemistry between Scud Cheng and He Fei is electric—so tender and playful. This is the queer joy I’ve been craving. Plus, the scenes in Tokyo and Paris are absolutely gorgeous. A must-watch for anyone who loves BL with a smile.

Visually stunning, but the plot is more a collection of vignettes than a cohesive story. The hedonistic travel montages are fun, but I wanted more narrative drive. The romance is sweet but underdeveloped. Still, it’s a pleasant watch if you don’t mind a meandering pace.

Every single shot is a painting. The lighting, the color grading, the way the ghosts glow softly against neon signs—this is pure visual poetry. The directors clearly put immense effort into making each location feel distinct and dreamlike. I’d watch this on mute just for the cinematography.

I appreciate that the film explores consent even in a supernatural context—the ghost protagonist always asks before touching or leading others. The representations of queer joy and casual intimacy are refreshingly positive. My only criticism is that the side characters could have used more depth, but the central message of freedom is beautifully told.

The soundtrack is an absolute banger! The mix of upbeat electronic tracks during travel montages and soft piano during emotional scenes perfectly captures the film’s dual tones. There’s a track by a local Hong Kong artist that I’ve had on repeat for weeks. The music alone makes this worth watching.
