In 'Gentleman Spa', a raw and tender Taiwanese short film, we follow Hao, a gentle-natured gay man whose body image struggles leave him believing that romantic connection is an impossible dream. Working as a janitor at a gay spa, he feels invisible among the toned masseurs and confident clients. That is until Kai, an attractive and unexpectedly kind customer, walks in and asks Hao to give him a massage. What begins as a fleeting encounter sparks a hesitant friendship, as Kai teaches Hao to swim and encourages him to make healthier choices. But when Hao discovers that Kai has been soliciting other masseurs at the spa, his fragile self-esteem shatters. This intimate, realistic drama explores the painful distance between wanting to be desired and learning to love yourself—and the harsh truth that attraction can’t be forced. A poignant and honest portrayal of body positivity, unrequited crush, and the slow, awkward journey toward self-acceptance.

I’m a sucker for any BL that dares to show a different body type, and this one really touched my heart. Hao’s longing is painfully real, and his chemistry with Kai felt genuine even if it was one-sided. The swimming lessons scene was so sweet it almost made me cry. Not a perfect romance, but an important one.

I appreciate the attempt at a realistic narrative, but the pacing is awkward and the story feels more like a series of uncomfortable moments than a cohesive arc. The ending is abrupt, and Kai’s motivations remain frustratingly vague. A decent concept let down by clunky execution.

This film tackles a subject often ignored in BL: the intersection of body image and desire. Hao’s journey from self-loathing to a tentative sense of agency is portrayed with uncomfortable honesty. Yes, the cringe is there, but that’s the point—attraction is messy and often cruel. Valuable viewing for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ social issues.

The cinematography is surprisingly moody for a short film—the spa's dim lighting and mirrors create a suffocating atmosphere that mirrors Hao’s inner world. However, the visual storytelling doesn't compensate for the thin script. Some shots are beautiful, but the overall film feels like a student project stretched too far.

I usually judge BL by its music, and here the soundtrack is completely forgettable—generic piano that adds nothing to the emotion. The swimming scene could have been elevated with a stirring track, but instead it fell flat. Combined with the lackluster story, this was a disappointing watch for me.
