When It Rains, It Pours is a masterfully crafted Japanese BL that dives deep into the quiet desperation of two men trapped in emotionally and physically unfulfilling relationships. Hagiwara Kazuaki lives with his girlfriend Kaori in a sexless, increasingly distant partnership, craving intimacy she can no longer offer. His coworker Nakarai Sei shares a home with his childhood friend Fujisawa, who cares for him but refuses any romantic or physical connection, leaving Sei feeling isolated and undesired. After Hagiwara accidentally sends a personal email to the wrong address, he begins an anonymous correspondence with Sei. What starts as a simple mistake blossoms into a raw, liberating exchange where both men can be utterly honest about their loneliness, desires, and frustrations. Unaware they are actually office colleagues, they find solace in words—until a chance discovery reveals their true identities. As their bond deepens, they must navigate the messy, painful consequences of seeking happiness outside their stagnant relationships. With rain as a constant, cleansing presence, this series explores the gray areas of love, consent, and the courage it takes to pursue genuine connection. It’s a poignant, mature drama that refuses to offer easy answers, leaving viewers both heartbroken and hopeful.

I am utterly in love with this drama. Hagiwara and Sei’s connection felt so real and aching—every stolen glance, every email made my heart race. The hotel room scene had me crying because it wasn’t just about lust; it was two broken souls finally feeling seen. This is mature, messy, beautiful romance at its finest.

The acting is superb, but the plot needed more runtime to breathe. Fujisawa’s backstory felt like a rushed attempt at redemption, and the finale left too much unresolved for the main couple. I also wish they had addressed Sei’s assault more explicitly instead of leaving it ambiguous. Still, it’s a compelling watch if you can overlook the pacing.

Every frame of this show is a painting. The rain is used so poetically—misting over windows, pooling on asphalt, reflecting neon lights. The museum scene with the statue? Absolute visual poetry. The lighting shifts from cold blues to warm ambers as the characters grow closer. A masterclass in mood-building.

I appreciate the drama’s honest look at sexless relationships and emotional neglect, but I’m frustrated by how it handles the assault. Sei’s reaction is realistic, yet the narrative never explicitly calls it rape, which leaves room for harmful interpretations. The leads’ consent in their own encounter is beautifully depicted, but the overall moral grayness requires careful viewing.

The ending theme is so haunting it stuck with me for days. Every time rain sounds mixed with that piano melody played during emotional peaks, I felt my chest tighten. The sound design is subtle but perfect—the pattering rain, the silence between emails, the soft breath during intimate moments. Music elevates this story immensely.
