In this heartfelt Chinese short film, Si Ning returns to his hometown with Patrick, his American boyfriend, hoping for a warm family reunion. But when his sexuality comes out accidentally, the atmosphere turns frosty—except for his seven-year-old nephew, whose innocent curiosity and open heart become the bridge between love and acceptance. 'Foreign Uncle' delicately explores the clash between tradition and modernity, familial duty and personal truth, all within the span of a single tense family gathering. With authentic performances and a tender touch, this short film captures the quiet courage of living authentically, and the surprising ways love can win over prejudice.

I absolutely loved the quiet tenderness between Si Ning and Patrick. Their love felt so real even without big gestures—just a hand on the shoulder, a look across the dinner table. The nephew was the MVP! This short film reminded me why I watch BL: for the hope that love can soften even the hardest hearts.

Visually, this short film does a lot with very little. The warm, nostalgic color grading contrasts beautifully with the cold reception of the family. I loved how the camera lingered on small details—the nephew's toy, the uneaten food on the table. The blocking during the dinner scene says more than dialogue ever could.

I wanted to like this more, but the pacing felt rushed even for a short film. The family's sudden shift from hostility to acceptance in the final moments was a bit too tidy and convenient. The performances were natural, but the script needed another pass to make the emotional beats land without feeling forced.

I appreciate how this film tackles the real pain of being outed without consent, and how it shows the subtle ways internalized homophobia can poison family relationships. Patrick's quiet frustration at not being able to communicate directly in Chinese was a smart touch. It's a realistic, if slightly idealized, look at how one brave family moment can start to heal generational rifts.

For a 20-minute watch, this hit me harder than some full-length dramas. The awkward dinner, the whispered reassurances, the way the nephew just accepts Patrick as 'foreign uncle'—it's all so pure. I cried a little when the brother finally spoke up. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a quick, emotional, and hopeful BL featuring an interracial couple.
