Fly in Shallow is a tender and heartfelt Chinese BL drama that traces the evolving bond between childhood best friends Chi Yue and Lu Xi. From shared secrets and innocent laughter to the quiet, confusing feelings that bloom in adolescence, the series beautifully captures the delicate transition from platonic friendship to romantic love. Adapted from the novel 'DICK FLY' by Maoye, this drama stands out for its soft, slice-of-life storytelling and authentic portrayal of self-discovery. Chi Yue's sunny optimism contrasts with Lu Xi's quiet introspection, creating a dynamic that feels both familiar and deeply moving. As they navigate school life, family expectations, and their own unspoken desires, viewers are drawn into a world where love grows naturally—without grand gestures, just the weight of unspoken truths. Fly in Shallow is a gentle, emotionally resonant journey that celebrates the beauty of first love and the courage it takes to cross the line between 'us' and 'you and me.'

I fell in love with Chi Yue and Lu Xi from the very first episode. Their friendship felt so real, and watching them slowly realize their feelings was pure magic. No grand drama, just two souls finding each other. Exactly what I needed.

The slow-burn is nice but honestly a bit too slow. Some side plots drag, and the school setting feels generic. I wanted more conflict or depth from the source material. Still, it's cute for what it is.

The cinematography surprised me—soft lighting, warm colors, and those lingering shots that make you feel every emotion. Even with a small budget, they made the ordinary look extraordinary. A visual hug.

As someone who read the novel 'DICK FLY', I appreciate the adaptation keeping the core sweetness, but they removed some of the novel's deeper emotional beats. The ending is softer, which works for drama but loses a little bite.

I enjoyed how the drama handled consent and the natural progression of feelings without any toxic tropes. Both leads respect each other's space. It's rare to see such a healthy portrayal of queer awakening in Chinese media.
