Fly by Night is a raw and intimate South Korean short film from 2011 that delves into the gritty reality of survival through prostitution. The story follows a teenage boy whose only remaining family is his older brother, struggling to get by in a harsh urban landscape. To make ends meet, he sleeps with older men for money, numbing himself to the transactional nature of these encounters. One night, he meets a client who can't afford the full fee. Instead of walking away, the man suggests they meet again the next day—an offer that sparks a tentative, fragile connection between them. As the boy navigates this unexpected relationship, he is forced to confront his own vulnerability, the blurred lines between exploitation and care, and the desperate need for human warmth. The film captures the emotional core of a life lived on the margins, exploring themes of poverty, brotherhood, and the search for genuine intimacy. With its gritty realism, prolonged nudity, and unflinching portrayal of sex work, Fly by Night offers a hauntingly beautiful yet heartbreaking glimpse into a world rarely seen in mainstream BL.

I went in knowing this was rough around the edges, but the chemistry between the leads honestly surprised me. It's not sweet or romantic — it's desperate and sad — but there's a flicker of something real that made my heart ache. The nudity felt heavy but never gratuitous. A tough watch, but I'm glad it exists.

I appreciate the attempt at gritty realism, but the story felt too thin and the pacing dragged even for a short film. The acting is okay, but the plot basically repeats the same beat. It's more of a mood piece than a narrative, which might work for some but left me underwhelmed.

As an exploration of survival sex work, this film raises important questions about agency and power dynamics, but it doesn't dive deep enough. The marginalized characters feel like archetypes, and the lack of clear consent in the transactions is troubling. Worth watching for discussion, but don't expect nuanced character development.

The cinematography is intentionally grainy and washed-out, matching the bleak mood. A few shots linger beautifully on the characters' faces, capturing vulnerability. However, the low budget shows in the audio and lighting consistency. It's a cohesive visual style, but the execution is uneven.
