Fish upon the Sky is a riotous Thai rom-com that swims against the current of typical BL dramas with its unabashed humor and self-aware charm. The story centers on Pi, a dental student whose crippling insecurity about his looks has kept him in the shadows—until he develops a crush on Muang Nan, the sun-kissed, universally adored senior from Allied Health Sciences. Convinced he has no chance, Pi enlists the help of his loud, over-the-top older brother Duean and a gang of well-meaning (if chaotic) friends to undergo a full makeover. But the path to love takes a sharp detour when Pi meets Mork, a handsome, relentlessly persistent fellow student who seems to see right through Pi's new exterior. What follows is a hilarious and heart-fluttering game of cat and mouse, as Pi tries to navigate his growing feelings, a swarm of invasive online shippers, and his own stubborn refusal to believe anyone could love him for who he really is. Adapted from JittiRain's novel, this series balances laugh-out-loud comedy with surprisingly poignant moments about self-acceptance, the toxicity of online fandom, and the messy reality of first love. Its standout feature is the parallel love story of Duean and the bubbly Meen—a couple so adorably chaotic they often steal the show. While the main romance divides viewers with its push-pull dynamic, the series' unfiltered energy, fourth-wall breaks, and clever use of a narrator make it a uniquely entertaining entry in GMMTV's lineup. Fish upon the Sky is a feel-good, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately endearing celebration of finding confidence—and love—even when you feel like the smallest fish in the sea.

I went in expecting a silly fluff piece, but Fish upon the Sky genuinely made me laugh until I cried! The comedy is top-tier, especially the Duean and Meen scenes—I swear I rewatched their 'Story of a Fifth-Year Student' segments like ten times. Pi's journey with self-love touched my heart, and even though Mork can be pushy, the way he pursues Pi shows how much he sees the real him. Yes, the plot is cliché, but the execution is so joyful and self-aware that it's impossible not to smile. This is my go-to comfort BL now.

Let's be real: Duean and Meen are the true stars of this show. Their chaotic banter, the dream sequences, the way Meen just rolls with Duean's insane energy—iconic. I honestly fast-forwarded through most Mork-Pi scenes just to get more of them. Louis and Neo have insane comedic timing and their chemistry is off the charts. If there was a spin-off just for them, I would watch it immediately. As for the main plot, it drags a bit and Mork's persistence borders on creepy, but the side couple more than makes up for it.

Fish upon the Sky has moments of brilliance—the comedy is genuinely sharp and some visual gags land perfectly. But as a story, it's a mess. The pacing is all over the place: eleven episodes of repetitive pining and then a rushed, tone-deaf drama dump in episode twelve. Pi's 'ugly duckling' transformation is laughably unconvincing, and Mork's character shift from stalker to sweetheart isn't earned. The side couple's story is more coherent, but even they suffer from juvenile writing. A fun ride if you turn your brain off, but don't expect a cohesive narrative.

I cannot believe this show tries to romanticize Mork's behavior. He stalks Pi, refuses to take no for an answer, manipulates him publicly, and pressures him into coming out against his wishes. And viewers call Pi 'whiny' for wanting boundaries? The gaslighting is real. I kept waiting for the series to condemn his actions, but instead it frames his persistence as romantic. The only saving grace is the side couple, who actually respect each other's space. This is a cautionary tale about how BL normalizes toxic dynamics. Watch if you must, but critical thinking is required.

The OST is absolutely stellar—both Mix and Louis have beautiful voices, and the theme songs perfectly capture the playful yet earnest tone of the series. I still have 'เข้าข้างตัวเอง' (Getting Carried Away) on repeat. That said, the background score is a mixed bag; those random English songs that pop up in the middle of emotional scenes are jarring and took me right out of the moment. If the music had been more consistent, this could have been a 9. Still, the main and ending themes alone are worth the watch.

As someone who adored the original novel, I was excited for this adaptation, but it missed the mark. The book gives Pi more depth and makes his insecurities truly heartbreaking, while the drama leans too hard into comedy and flattens his character. Mork in the novel is still persistent but has softer moments that explain why Pi falls for him; here, he's just a one-note pursuer. The side couple was expanded well, which I appreciate, but the main romance lost all its nuance. Also, the removal of several sweet scenes from the book made their relationship feel hollow.

Visually, this show is a treat. The color palette is warm and inviting, with gorgeous sunlight shots that make the university feel like a dream. The director uses clever framing—like the split-screen narration between Pi's internal monologue and the 'Story of a Fifth-Year Student' segments—to keep the energy fresh. I also loved the lighting in Pi's bedroom scenes; it's soft and intimate without being overly romanticized. The production design shows real care (even the messy bedrooms look lived-in). If only the script had as much polish as the cinematography.
