What happens when a sham relationship becomes the perfect cover for two friends who are secretly in love with their own best friends? In this delightfully chaotic Korean mini-series, Min-hwan and Joo-ha are pressured into becoming a 'fake couple' at a social event, but neither of them has any romantic interest in the other. Instead, Min-hwan has been harboring a secret crush on his male best friend Jin-hiuk, while Joo-ha has been falling for her female best friend Soeun. As the fake relationship drags on, both are too afraid to admit the truth—until a series of hilariously awkward misunderstandings forces them to confront their real feelings. With sharp comedic timing, a wink-and-nod approach to its own absurdity, and genuine warmth for all four leads, 'Fake Buddies' is a refreshingly modern take on friendship, identity, and the courage it takes to be honest with the people you love. Short, sweet, and packed with laughter, it proves that sometimes the best love stories start with a little bit of pretending.

I absolutely adored this! It's fluffy, funny, and oh-so-sweet. The way both couples slowly realize their feelings gave me all the butterflies. Min-hwan and Jin-hiuk have such adorable chemistry, and Joo-ha and Soeun made my heart melt too. Perfect for anyone who loves a feel-good queer romance that doesn't take itself too seriously. I've already rewatched it twice!

Given that this is a no-budget YouTube production, the cinematography is surprisingly effective. The lighting in the café scenes feels warm and intimate, and the editing keeps the comedic beats snappy. Sure, it's not going to win any technical awards, but the creators knew their limitations and worked with them cleverly. The casual handheld style adds to the 'next door' charm. A solid proof-of-concept for the director.

I wanted to like this more, but the non-linear storytelling was confusing for such a short runtime. I kept losing track of what happened when. The characters are charming but underdeveloped—we barely get to know Jin-hiuk or Soeun outside of their love interests. It's cute and breezy, but it feels more like a highlight reel than a complete story. Still, I appreciate the attempt at a dual BL/GL narrative, even if the execution was messy.

What I love most is how the series gently critiques the pressure to conform to heterosexual norms without being heavy-handed. The 'fake couple' setup is a clever device to explore how fear of rejection can make us lie to ourselves and others. The communication (or lack thereof) feels painfully realistic, especially among long-time friends. It's refreshing to see a story where coming out isn't the central trauma—it's just a funny, awkward step toward happiness. Great message wrapped in candy floss.

I'm here for the GL side and it did not disappoint! Joo-ha and Soeun's relationship was so soft and genuine—I wanted more of their sweet moments. The hesitant touches and shy confessions were perfect. While I wish the series had given them equal screen time with the guys, what we got was lovely. It's rare to see a mini-series that balances both a BL and a GL couple, and I'm grateful for that. More of this, please!
