What would you say to your future self if you could send a letter across a decade? That is the tender premise of 'Every Moment That I Think of You Special' (2021), a rare and intimate Chinese short film that captures the quiet ache of growing up and the enduring power of first love. At 18, Yang Yu Hang writes a deeply personal letter to his 28-year-old self, pouring out his hopes, fears, and the boy he secretly loves. Through delicate flashbacks and heartfelt voiceovers, we witness a love that is both painfully young and timelessly sincere. The special unfolds like a memory you can almost touch — soft, melancholic, and achingly beautiful. With a single gay male lead at its core, it is a restrained yet revolutionary piece of storytelling that offers authentic queer representation within China's censored media landscape. By the final frame, you'll feel as if you have been entrusted with someone's most private treasure.

I had to pause halfway through because my heart was so full. The way Yang Yu Hang's younger self writes to his future self, confessing his love so honestly — it's everything I want in a BL. No drama, no toxic mess, just pure, aching sweetness. The letter reading scene made me cry like a baby. More of this, please!

I appreciate the effort and the representation, but as a narrative it feels more like a concept teaser than a complete story. The entire thing is essentially one long voiceover with flashbacks that don't really build a relationship — we're told about the love but never shown enough to feel its depth. For a short film it's okay, but I wanted more substance.

Visually this is a gem. The soft, desaturated color palette, the shallow depth of field during the letter scenes, and the way light falls on Yang Yu Hang's face during the flashbacks — it's like watching a moving photograph. The director knows exactly when to linger and when to cut. Even if the plot is slight, the craft is top-tier.

For a Chinese production in 2021, this short film is quietly revolutionary. It doesn't sensationalize or victimize the gay lead — it simply lets him be a teenager with a crush, without any homophobic tragedy. The letter format also gives agency: he's choosing to document his truth for his future self. That's a powerful, consent-aware narrative choice. I wish more BL would take this honest, introspective route.

The music does half of the emotional work here. The recurring piano theme is so simple but it perfectly mirrors the nostalgia and longing of the story. There's also a soft guitar track during the final flashback that hit me right in the chest. I honestly rewatched just to listen to the soundtrack again. Wish the score was released officially.
