In a fantastical Edo period where only men exist, the elegant courtesan Dayu Shiratori is haunted by grief after his apprentice’s tragic suicide. His world of incense and silk turns cold until he crosses paths with the most popular candy boy in town—a vibrant, mischievous confectioner whose sweet treats and irresistible charm begin to melt Dayu’s sorrow. As their worlds collide, a tender romance blossoms amid floating lanterns, sugar sculptures, and the whimsical rules of this all-male wonderland. Candy Boys blends comedy, fantasy, and heartfelt drama into a uniquely Japanese fairy tale about healing through love, proving that even the most desolate heart can find sweetness again.

I absolutely adored this movie! The candy boy and Dayu had such beautiful chemistry—their first kiss under the paper lanterns made my heart flutter. It's rare to see a BL with a happy, magical setting like this. Perfect comfort watch for when you need pure sweetness.

The concept is inventive, and the costumes are fun, but the pacing drags in the middle. The apprentice's suicide feels a bit glossed over for such a heavy trigger. I wanted more world-building—why is this a men-only Edo? Still, it's a decent light watch if you don't mind loose logic.

Visually this film is a candy box come to life! The color grading is warm and dreamy, the candy sculptures are incredibly detailed, and the costuming—especially Dayu's kimonos—is divine. Every frame could be a painting. The fantasy Edo feels both nostalgic and fresh. A feast for the eyes.

I appreciate the attempt at a queer-positive fantasy, but the power imbalance between the courtesan and the candy boy made me uneasy. Dayu is older and in a vulnerable state—I wish the film had addressed consent dynamics more thoughtfully. Still, it's harmless fluff for those who enjoy escapism without social critique.
